L.I. EQUINE'S MESSAGE BOARD

Welcome to LI Equine's Message Board! This is the place to post your ideas, suggestions, stories, etc. All are invited to keep us up to date on what's going on at your barn in the "Barn News" section. The "Bargain Barn" is available for you to list for sale all items under $100 (any item over $100 is considered a classified ad and must be submitted as such!) Please remember that we do not post horses for sale, lease, or share board unless the horses are for free. We also don't post classified ads on the message board. And....please remember - if you don't have anything nice to say - don't say anything at all!

I am seriously considering selling hay, grain, and shavings to Long Island. I obviously need to find out if it would be cost effective for me to do so, but would anyone be interested? I would have to take orders for exactly what was needed as well.

Parelli e-News: IS IT TIME TO USE LESS SHIMS?
    QUESTION
You have provided us with lots of information and instruction about pads and shims, which has been most helpful. I have a new three yr old TB/QH gelding who is still filling out and building muscle. He was very lean when I purchase him four months ago and has since put on almost 100 lbs. When the vet checked him the first time, I was advised to get my new saddle with wide gullet, because he had plenty of growing to do. I am using Theraflex pad, currently with 2 1/2 inch shims front, 1/4 inch shim middle, and 1 1/2 shim at back. I have not found any "dry spots" after riding, so I am assuming my shim placement is correct. What signs would tell me it is time to use less shimming? -LD

ANSWER
It sounds like you are doing great! I love to hear things like this, well done. If your shims were not right your saddle will not look balanced from front to back (level or very slightly up in front), the saddle would feel tight over the shoulders or dig into him in the loins, and you might have dry spots. From a movement perspective, your horse might feel more heavy on the forehand or choppy in his stride, carry his head too high and contract his back and hollow out some! When a horse has no muscle you might find that as he grows muscle you can use less shim. And not to confuse you, but from a performance / collection perspective, sometimes the more shim you use the better they are! For example, I can have Remmer comfortable with one thick shim in the front, but when I do two he lifts his front end way more. So when your young horse is ready for collection, around Level 3, you might want to experiment with how shims can add a performance edge for you.

Maybe this will shut you up. Probably not, but it's worth a shot. It's a story about Eight Belle's necropsy report. She had NO bone density issues. All this was, was a freak accident. Maybe you'll listen to those that actually did the necropsy, you know, people with degrees to actually make these assessments.

Hey everyone. I'm looking to adopt a puppy but all of the shelter I've been to only have older dogs, and I currently have a dog that only gets along well with puppies. I don't want to go to a pet shop, because I don't support puppy mills. If anyone knows where I could go that would be great. Thanks!

Just wanted to ask everyone exactly what is going on down on LI with the grain situation? Are all the feed stores short? Are the prices going way up? I understand everyone uses all different kinds and brands...are they supplying what you want, when you need it?
I may have an idea, so please give me some imput.

  CHESTNUT FEED
Been dealing with Chestnut feed for a while.Needed shavings fast they delivered it to me the same day. Very reliable they may be a little more in price but they always have want I need. Josh and his staff are the nicest people to deal with.So if anyone needs shavings or horse food in a hurry that's the place to go.

  racetracks and whips
i was reading your posts on the whips with the racehorses. and just to let some of you know that they really dont whip them to make them go faster. they will whip them to get the horse to extend thier stride..so it looks like they are whipping them to make them go faster..but they are not..so hope that makes people feel better about the whipping in racing.. also they are trained that way and the horse knows whats up. well have a good day.

  Shavings/Hay, etc...
Just a quick add to the shavings topic. Believe it or not this is a direct reflection of the home mortgage crisis as well. There are less new houses being sold and constructed because less people can get mortgages. The fallout is less lumber is needed, therefore less shavings are produced. Lumber mills are closing left and right. We are luck to be paying $5/bag in PA, but I know places charging upwards of $7/bag all ready.

Out of curiousity, What are you paying per bale of hay or by the ton now on the island? Between cost of fuel (farmers tractors take fuel as well as the delivery keep in mind) and grain and seed costs going up I know alot of farmers around here are making alot more money growing corn (ethanol),soy and sunflowers (Lays has contracts out all over the place b/c of frying in sunflower oil now). As well as Wal-Mart is paying so many farmers to reserve their fields for pumpkins for Halloween. Horses, if they weren't all ready, are becoming more of a luxury item.

  Buy, grow, eat local
There are tens of thousands of horses on this island. We depend almost 100% on shipped hay grown hundreds of miles away. Or feed and shavings processed and shipped. Oy vey. It's simply not sustainable. The whole economy was built upon the model of unlimited and cheap oil. Foolish! Now it ruined our climate too. We overshot decades ago, and the collapse is happening. In the not so near future can see ppl begging LIPA not to mow power line areas, or colleges not to mow campuses, or neighbors not to mow lawns so as to graze their hungry horses.

Hi, I read that someone had a stallion gelded for 300.00? Was that done on the island? I know of a friend who needs to have a stallion gelded. That is a great price. Would you be able to post what vet did it? Thank you very much.

  pet bowl
Ditto,Zero. For several years Margaret delivered my grain and woody pet. I saved alot of money as her prices on grain were cheaper than most competitors. I got alot of good, sound nutritional advice plus the warning that things would get bad and if I wanted a sure supply of hay, I should buy my own place.
She said alot of farmers were switching from hay to corn. (ethanol). This was several years ago..IF she is closing, it will be the end of an era. In this time of economic instability we need to support the small businesses that were good to us in the past.

Pet Bowl...My Last Post on It
I have met the owner too, and she is a Very Nice Lady. I have not seen her there for a while...it's just the kids and young guy help every time I stopped by. Pleasant help.
Not like Uncle Fester at Medford. I hear he got bounced out only to open under his son's name down the road. Wow, what a system...if chickens could talk....poor things.
But what was aggravating, was to call and call for weeks on end -asking about the shavings and to be told (not by her, but the staff) "Oh it's not in, we expect it in a few days"
I know how gas and our economy in general is doing a nose dive. We paid 72 bucks to fill our SUV the other day. Our next car will be a moped. But the shaving calls I made were really ridiculous on my part because I believed them....for 6 weeks!
I hope they make it. It's nice to have a place so close, and I like the owner.
But don't keep customers hanging on that way. Just say you don't know when you are getting in the product, instead of making them call ...and call...and call.....just to hear that they won't carry shavings anymore.

  Re: No Shavings
One thing to keep in mind is that in order for stores to get shavings, the saw mills have to be producing it. I live up in NH, and the last big saw mill in the state closed over the winter. We used to get our shavings fresh from the mill by the truckload, and now we have to buy shavings from way up in Maine, because no one around here can offer them at an affordable price anymore. With so many shavings being sold locally, that just leaves less to make it down to places like Long Island.

So, just bear in mind, as a few other people have said, the rising costs of fuel and all that have a huge impact. Companys aren't going to pay to have their shavings shipped to far away places when there's now an increasing need at home. (Don't know what shavings prices are down there, but up here we're paying 5.50 a bag)

We can all only hope that we get a break soon. For the shavings, of course, but the same goes for hay and grain as well. (I for one, can't wait until my neighbor starts haying his fields in two weeks! Then I'll know my horses are eating good and I won't be paying 6$ a bale for yucky stuff)

  Photos at Belmont and Saratoga
I was at the track complete with my Canon A-1, back in the day. Huge telephoto lenses and a mirror lens weighed me down. (remember the circles in the mirror lense?)
I stood in the pouring rain armed with a tripod. Waited hours for a rail postition so I could get the shot.
Thank goodness I do have photos of Seattle Slew, Genuine Risk, Conquistador Ciello, Spectacular Bid, and Forego. There was a lovely filly Dearly Precious, that I loved.

  PET BOWL
SEEMS LIKE TIMES ARE HARD FOR EVERYONE INCLUDING FEED STORES WITH GAS GOING UP. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW HARD IT MUST BE FOR THE FFED INDUSTRY WITH SHIPPING FEED. I AM SURE THEY WANT MONEY UPFRONT TO PAY FOR GAS TO DELIVER THE SUPPLIES. JUST GETTING TO THE BARN TO CARE FOR MY HORSE COSTS ME SO MUCH NOW WITH THE PRICE OF GAS. I HAD TO CUT A DAY OFF OF GOING TO THE BARN TO BE ABLE TO SAVE SOME MONEY. I WOULD HOPE HORSE PEOPLE WOULD UNDERSTAND HOW ON A WHOLE PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED BY THE PRICE OF GAS. FEED , HAY AND SAVING WENT UP ALSO. MARGRET IS A WONDERFUL PERSON WHO IS ALWAYS WILLING TO LEND A HAND WITH ANY ISSUE REGARDING AN ANIMAL. SHE HAS BEEN AN AMAZING HELP FOR ME AND OTHERS WITH SICK HORSES.YOU COULD NOT STOP ME FROM STANDING BY A ANIMAL LOVER AND A TRUE CARING PERSON JUST BECAUSE SHE IS NOT OPEN TO SHARE THINGS THAT ARE REALLY NOT MY BUSINESS TO KNOW. SHE HAS ALWAYS GOTTEN ME WHAT I NEED THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS NOW I PLACE AN ORDER INSTEAD OF JUST BEING ABLE TO STOP BY AND PICK UP WHAT I NEED. BIG DEAL, BIGGER PROBLEMS IN LIFE.

  Thank you Janine!
I just wanted to take the time to thank Janine from the Giddy Up Gang who got my butt in a saddle again! Its been quite a long time since i've ridden. I went from riding a few horses a day, open eq/jumpers/gymkhana/team penning, to nothing, over the past ten years! So i felt it was time to start back up again. I honestly thought i was going to be pretty much like a sack of potatoes, that my leg was going to be all over the place, and just totally unbalanced. All these years everything was still in my head, but not with the body, LOL! I had actually been a little afraid to get on. Not from actual fear per se, but afraid of how bad i was going to look and feel.
Well, i was pleasantly surprised today! I rode Janine's horse Sunny, and he was pretty much what i needed. I stocky quarter horse that required leg. Not a massive amount, but enough that it will help me build my leg back up again.
So, thank you Janine for getting me going again! I really look forward to continuing on with you!

I called today cause I needed grain for my mare. I asked her what was going on. She told me she has to order less cause they need the money up front and it's to expensive. But K your right she should be honest with her customers. I feel like a fool always calling. Today was my last call to them. Oh Yea she told me she wasn't closing I don't believe it for one minute. What is the big secret? And I don't like to spread rumors either. But I heard in other feed stores what they thought was going on.

Rachel Gitlitz with Simon were there, Marianne DeStephano w/ Bella, A lady who wrote a book called "Sorrell", can't remember her name and of course a lot of the show kids whose names I don't remember so well now either...and then there was the young lady who had a horse, and a mare and foal, moved the mare and other horse top Gold Coast, and the foal to the barn across the street...can't remember her name right now either...boy its tough getting old!

Bayville woman accused of abusing horses in Glen Cove
BY SUSANA ENRIQUEZ | susana.enriquez@newsday.com
7:03 PM EDT, May 13, 2008

A Bayville woman was released on $5,000 bail after pleading not guilty Tuesday to charges of abusing her two horses.

Kelly Pfeifer, 44, was arraigned in Glen Cove City Court nearly three weeks after a thoroughbred horse named Kava and a pony named Star were seized from 93 Crescent Beach Rd. in Glen Cove.

During several visits, officers from the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found that the horses were emaciated, without food, water or salt, and were in stalls containing more than 2 feet of manure, two SPCA officers said in written depositions filed in court.

In another deposition, Muttontown horse veterinarian Pam Corey said, "Star was so bony that her bones were sticking out in every place they could." The pony could not eat, the veterinarian said, because her dental care had been neglected, a condition that prevented her from chewing.

The horses were housed in a two-car garage that had been converted into a stable, said Eugene O'Brien, deputy chief of the Nassau County SPCA. Records show that the property, previously owned by Pfeifer, is owned by Bank of New York.

Pfeifer's attorney, Steven Morelli, said he has veterinary bills and receipts for feed, along with witnesses who said they had seen her buy food and feed them regularly.

"She was distraught that anyone would think she would hurt those horses in any way," said Morelli, of Carle Place. "She loves these horses."

He said Pfeifer may not fight to keep the horses but instead have them placed in a good home.

"She will make sure that the right thing will be done by these horses," he said.

Animal cruelty, a misdemeanor, is punishable by a maximum fine of $1,000 and/or up to one year in jail, said Eric Phillips, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

O'Brien said the horse and pony were being vaccinated and treated for anemia, worms and parasites. Both have gained weight, he said.

"They're both coming around to where they should be," O'Brien said. "We're hopeful that both will be OK."

The horses are being housed in a stable in Nassau County. O'Brien declined to reveal the location, saying he wanted to protect the animals and their caretaker

Thanks for the compliment. And no, sadly i don't have any from those days. I didn't go to the track nearly as much as i do now, and i've only been credentialed at nyra for the past 3 years or so. If you wanted any of Mott's, My Typhoon, those i have! Ok, she was no Cigar, but a grand mare in her own right. I had dabbled with the photography thing in my teens, but never at the track till a few years ago. So most of what i have is much more recent. I do wish i was doing this back then! Although it was all film in those days, i'd have loved to have had Seattle Slew, Alydar, on up to Cigar. Those definitely were the better days of racing. More stars on the track then than there are now. Invasor was the closest thing we had to compare to those back in the 70's.

I hate to spread a rumor, but it's been 8 weeks at least that Pet Bowl has had shavings. Today I called, and they said they will not carry them anymore. The shelves have been really empty lately. I don't know what's going on, the sign was down, or was blown down the day I was there, and no one is talking. I wish they would be honest with their customers if closing. I mean, how hard is it to get shavings? Something is up, but I don't' know what.

And i got in touch with my hay guy today, and he mentioned the Agway in Hicksville (didn't know it had another name), and he is supposed to be bringing me 4 bags tomorrow. This is my unreliable hay guy, so i better get it from him tomorrow, or i'll have to go elsewhere to get it. Thanks for the info.

  Circus!
I am so excited you posted that...that is indeed Marjorie Cordero's "Circus"...I'd know him anywhere from the tornado-shaped star.
Circus was the first horse I ever rode, and I "free-leased" him from Marjorie for a little over a year, at Skip Lauinger's Hunters Isle on Hegemans Lane in Old Brookville. I only had to give him back to them when the races were running in Saratoga in August. Then Skip gave me his older grey Arab, Silver, as a "loaner". I am so glad to hear he's enjoying life! I researched his activities at Ringling Bros a little; the only thing I ever found out was that they had a "red" and a "blue" team, and he was on the blue team. As you said, he used to colic on the circus trains, so they were going to put him down...until Angel and Marge rescued him.
I have Circus' stall plate hanging on the wall of my office, under a painting I had done of him.

I'm not sure if that is the same Circus or not. Next time i'm there, i can try to find out. I see Angel around alot, but to be honest, i'm actually afraid to ask, only because then i have to mention Marjorie, and since she lost her life the way she did, i don't know if it is still a sore subject with him or not. If i see Jerkens assistant, i'll ask him, he might know.

As far as what will happen to Funny when he can't work anymore-well, there will be two options. One of Funny's owners owns McMahon Thoroughbreds up near Saratoga, he could always go there. Winstar Farm (who stands his sire, Distorted Humor), has already told them he would always have a home there. In a worst case scenario (and not that this is even a bad thing), there is always the Kentucky Horse Park. Right now there is no room there for him, but we're talking years down the road, so maybe later on in his life it could be an option. Funny is the most famous NY bred around and a derby winner, they will make sure that if he can't be a pony, that he will have a home that will spoil him. Robin, Barclay's assistant/exersize rider/girlfriend, will make sure of that.

Hi -- In the picture of Funny Cide with another horse named Circus -- was Circus Marjorie Cordero's horse?? When Skip Laranger was on Hegemen's Lane, Old Brookville, Marjorie and the girls hard 2 horses there. Her horse's name was Circus and the kids said he didn't travel well with Barnamen Bailey Circus so Marjorie got him. Don't know if that was a true story or a tall tail (smile). If it's her Circus, glad to know he is doing fine.

What will happen to Funny Cide and Circus when they get too old too work????

  Ranches out west
I've been out west a bunch of times to ranches and one of the best we've been to was called Grapevine Canyon Ranch in Arizona. I'ts been 10 years since we've been there but I believe it is still the same. The scenery is just gorgeous and we went with my 70 year old parents and they did great. My mother had barely ever stepped foot in a stirrup and she was just thrilled. The ranch only accomodates like 20 or 25 guests. It's very homey and the cabins are just great. That's if it's still all the same! I believe the website is www.gcranch.com

  American Museum of Natural History
From May 17, 2008–January 4, 2009, the American Museum of Natural History will be showcasing an exhibition entitled The Horse, which reveals the
fascinating story of the enduring bond between horses and humans and explores the origins of the horse family, which extends back more than 50
million years. Over the course of history we have preyed upon horses, domesticated them, and shaped them into the “animated machinery” that helped create the modern world. Highlights of the exhibition include a hand-painted diorama, spectacular fossils, cultural artifacts, interactive
stations, and more. The whole family can come discover how we have shaped the horse, and how the horse, in turn, has shaped us.

AMNH is asking the Islip Horsemen's Association for its help in getting the word out to its constituency about this spectacular new
exhibition by either displaying The Horse rack cards at your facility or by displaying a link to The Horse webpage on your website.

Please let me know if you are interested. If you have any questions, feel
free to contact me at (212)313-7216 or email me at fkanhayuwa@amnh.org.

Mohonk Mountain House.....not in The Shining
Actually the exterior scenes in the movie The Shining were filmed at the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood in Oregon. Only the exterior of the Lodge was used, all of the interior scenes were filmed using studios with sets built in London and shipped here. Mohonk Mountain House was not in that movie at all. My brother in law skiied Mt Hood and sent my husband and I a book about the resort.

  Grandma Sharyn
Just when I thought it was safe to go to bed again LOL

I had my phone by the bed all night long Cowgirl. Will do the same tonight. However, they don't always come on time and I have had some as late as 30 days, (still in normal range) and same mare was right on time this year. If her milk is amber and now amber with a drop of what looks like cream in apple cider call Dr Mac and let him know "You Got Milk" So he knows what's happening. It usually happens within 12 hours after that. However, I had some foal no milk (they might have gone to milk in middle of night and than foaled sooner) and others foal days after milk showed up,so again there are exceptions to the rule. But the apple cider with a drop of cream is usually the good sign. Check that a few times a day till you see milk.

After that happens and If she is showing signs like getting up and down, moaning a little, tail up too long of a period of time, (again it could be gas or baby laying on one side) each mare is different, call Dr Mac and let him know. But you need to be sure and not just keep calling him LOL. Dr Ed loves to deliver the babies and leaves after they are up and nursing so your in good hands with either. From the time they start the moaning or getting up and down till the time they actually push the foal out is pretty quick. It's best to have wireless cameras in the stall to watch from inside the house till things are happening.

Call me anytime phone is on!!!!!

  Sharyn, Gina
Sharyn, i have to guess that the "castle" at Mohonk is not one you recognize. Now i've never been there, but i do know that that is where the movie, The Shining was filmed. :-)

Gina- yeah, i was there too, in that pouring rain! And i don't think i ever heard that place go from so loud, to dead quiet, so fast! There were 101,000 people there that day in that weather. Since Funny was a "local" horse, had the weather been nicer, that Belmont would have held the attendance record. Right now the record is 120,000. He loves the attention he gets, even though its not as much now as it used to be. He's definitely one of the luckier ones.

Trail ride Mt. Mohank 2 hours away
I forgot to say that on the www.lihorseproperties.com home page that is a photo of Jenny on the trail in Mt.Mohank. I loved it so much that I used it on my homepage of the site. If anyone is into trail rides this is the place to go. There is also an old rail trail at the bottom if you stay a few days I would also recommend that ride as well. It was an old railroad and they picked up the tracks and made a trail. The footing is wonderful and you go over bridges and waterfalls. You need to condition your horses before a mountain ride for at least 3 weeks before you go.

Jenny's mare is ready to foal any day now. We are very SCARED! Rita has been wonderful she is the BEST person to call for advice. Rita keep your phone by your bedside girlfriend.

  Funny Cide
The reason I wanted to know what happened to him, is because I was ,at the Belmont Stakes when everyone thought he was going to go all the way with the derby, stakes and preakness.
I was very pregnant, it was pouring rain, and I stood in my "good spot" in that rain for hours. When he lost, you could hear a pin drop. The whole track was quiet, and all the people streamed out without a word.I will never forget that day.
You could FEEL the sadness. Such high hopes for this fella.
But, alls well that ends well...

  RANCHES TO RIDE IN
    Hi
The most beautiful place I ever rode is under 2 hours from Long Island. http://www.mohonk.com

You ride above the clouds from mountain to mountain. You can stay in this beautiful castle and your mom will love the small town below. Its full of adorable restaurants and stores to shop in.

If you go in the summer you can swim in the lake. There is a barn and we took our own horses. If you can not afford to sleep in the castle you can stay at the super 8 below and still use the barn at the castle. I stayed at the castle and it was worth every penny! My kids loved it also and the best time to go is mid week so the trails have no walkers. The trails have no rocks footing is excellent. You pass waterfalls and beautiful views. I have ridden remote places all over the world even in Hawaii it was not any nicer than this place.

The barn is adorable clean and well kept. I took my own grain, they have grain and hay.

It was awsome to have my family and my own horses on such a nice ride.

  Ranches out West?
I am graduating from St. Joseph's College and as a Graduation present me and my mother are going to go to a dude ranch. I really want to go out West somewhere so we can trail ride in the mountains and with the beautiful views. I was wondering if anyone here has ever done this before and has suggestions? My mom is not a rider so she does not want a cattle drive or overnight sleep outside type of thing. Any suggestions?

  Funny Cide
Oldetownee is correct (and thanks for the compliment!). Funny Cide is now a stable pony for his trainer Barclay Tagg. Funny's last race was last year, early July, which he won. He never ran in any claiming races, but, his time had come to retire. Funny is the type of horse that needs a job, and now he is a stable pony for the barn. He absolutely loves it! He settled in to his new job within days of retiring from racing. He isn't ready to go out and gallop with the other horses just yet, he still tries to race them, LOL!
I see him all the time, and he is living an awesome life! I'll put the links below to some of the albums i have with him in them. Right now my site is down, server issues, but i have them posted at a racing gallery. So, you might have to scroll thru pictures of other horses before finding Funny. Last time my son was with me, he took some video of him, but i have yet to figure this stupid camera thing out. I have the video downloaded to my computer, and have burned stuff to disc, but for some reason i can't seem to find it on the computer, to be able to put it on youtube. When i figure that out, i'll post the link. And i know i have more pics, that i apparently haven't posted yet, from my last visit with my son. For now, here are the links to the pictures.

http://finalturngallery.com/g2/main.php/v/NY-Racing-Photos12/Saratoga/
the majority of these are of Funny, on the aptly named "Funny Cide Day" at Saratoga last year. Most non racing people of course don't know what happens to alot of these horses, but this horse is very well documented, and spoiled as hell!
He isn't the most friendliest horse (heck, i've seen stallions that are friendlier, LOL!), but he lives a very good life.

Congrats Nicole Z an Outlaws Vixen End of Day High Point
Congrats to our Nicole Z she just went to Hidden Pond English show this am to find out she got end of day High Point with our Outlaws Vixen at the last show. She has been cleaning up with this young pony. I did have her for lease on LIequine Higlands Vixen now she is leased by two children Emma S and Nicole Z who both have gotten end of day Grands and now High Point and a gorgeous Cooler. Way to go Girls.

Outlaw ponies and horse have to do both Western and English to be Outlaws. Outlaw Riders do have a choice but most come over to the dark side sooner or later. Look for Nicole and maybe even Emma at the IHA Gymkhana show riding Midnight Outlaw next week.
Vixen will do green Western Pleasure and Jr HUS at the IHA western show and we are so happy to see so many clubs and barns doing both, Hidden Pond, LIHS, Touch and Go and IHA all offering both.

I am sponsoring the Jr (for five and under) Sr (for 6 and over) Novice and Amateur Hunter Under Saddle classes at IHA and I will be looking for some great end of year prizes to give away to make this work for next year.

I am also sponsoring the NPBA National Pole Bending Classes and need some sponsor help. We would like to add $500 a show if possible and give away a saddle end of year. This can only happen with sponsor help. Please give me a call 445 2412 for details on NPBA shows and sponsoring.

Happy Mothers Day to all

Rita

  Race whips
The jockey whip with the "spikes" is actually pretty common. They are not spikes, but short pieces of leather called "feathers," braided onto the shaft just above the popper of the whip. I originally thought they were used to add more sting, but after reading further I learned that they may be used to cushion the impact of the whip. I have a jockey whip that was given to me by a racetrack employee a long time ago, and it is pretty rigid. Therefore, I always assumed that the jockeys were really whipping the horses pretty badly, since the whips would bend nearly ninety degrees as they were swung, but apparently there are many different options for a more, or less, flexible whip. I'll be sure to keep this in mind the next time I see a race. Also, I agree that in the hands of a patient trainer/ rider a whip is not necessarily such a horrible thing.

  Tick and Flea Year High
Don't want to fill the message boards, but just to let everyone know, that this year will be HECK with ticks, and fleas and generally all bugs. We run a grooming business, and already 4 dogs have come in with ticks. A Maltese came in dotted with fleas, and covered with flea dirt. My inside cat had a tiny tick on it's ear! It's horrible. To make matters worse, Frontline was on 2 of the dogs coming in the shop! Immunity problems cropping up? Dunno, but be prepared, and I remember the fleas Dancing over the flea collars of the 70's - so anything is possible. The Sunken Meadow has tent caterpillars like I have never seen. Waves and waves of tents.
It's a ten year cycle, so that adds more problems.

  Whips, and Crops Oh My!
Hi, all, I am glad we can talk about this issue with good taste and class.
I for the life of me (why would I make this up?) cannot find the pix of the weird whip with the little prong like things on it, so I will say it does not exist until I find it again. It seemed to have existed earlier! It was black, with little spike like bumps in it. But go to this different site and please tell me you don't think this normal racing whip hurts.
>>>>>http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/racing/article3641890.ece<<<
I know that there are balky horses that need a slap, but the noise does the job in most of the cases. I'm not saying not to use a bat or long crop with a flattie end, it just that there must be a better way than a stinging punishment unless it is a clearly spoiled animal who is a bully and a danger - and other methods have failed.
I loved racing. I watched Ruffian break down. Her jockey was different. He heard something, but she kept on running. He had to grind her to a stop and propped his body up against hers to help - with tears streaming down his face.
It's all a shame and could still be a wonderful sport if modified a bit.
I don't think the people who do TB rescue though, think it's so wonderful when they are filled to the gills with young broken down two year olds. I have a sickening feeling that the numbers on the track are far less than the numbers in rescue, or in backhoed graves, or worse, on a French plate.
Again, all opinions are respected.

  K, forgot to mention
Jockeys DO get penalized for excessive whipping. It seems to happen more in California then anywhere else, i just always seem to hear those stories coming from out there. I personally have never witnessed excessive whipping. I've seen some jocks do bad things, and get suspensions and fines for those things. They are definitely watched.

05/09/2008   08:45:41 PM   [ Dianne ]

  K, Trakgal
I didn't check the link out yet, but i will, thanks for posting it. I remember being by the jocks room when someone came in selling whips/crops, whatever you want to call them, and the ones they had weren't the "flat hands" so to speak, but they were more like a regular bat end. Maybe this is just here in NY, i don't know.
It is possible that a more seasoned jock would have thought sooner, or pulled her up faster. But the trainer did say that she always lugged in. And she wasn't lugging out, the jock was bringing his hand out, to get her from going in. And she very well could have sustained an injury as she was coming down the stretch. I don't know if the necropsy is going to show that or not. SO far, they have definitely ruled out any heart issues.

Trakgal, here's my prediction as far as Big Brown goes- if he wins the Preakness, he will never race past the Belmont, regardless of his finish in that race. Since Smarty Jones (who, for those that don't know, was syndicated for around $60 MILLION), other than Giacomo, none of the derby winner's ran past the age of 3. Smarty and Afleet Alex had "mysterious" issues that cropped up after the Belmont. I say mysterious because those that were involved will want the public to think it was that they retired because of an injury, when in reality, it was the huge dollar signs for a stallion deal. I love racing very much, but no one can deny that the breeder's are ruining the sport. This is one reason i like Shadwell as much as i do, they will limit their stallions. Invasor and Jazil were limited to 85 mares this season. I recall reading somewhere, and of course i forgot what stallion it was (but it was a higher profile stallion), but that he had bred around 230 mares the year prior. I thought that was insane! One way i think they can improve the breed is to only be able to breed grade one winners. If your horse doesn't win a grade one, he can't be bred. There are lots of things that can be done, but nothing will happen till the breeder's make it happen. First thing on the list should be to geld Unbridled's Song! Why people even breed to that horse is beyond me!
I know i had more to say, but i have to get my son, so i'll try to finish up later.

  crops and whips
Hi K, I am going to disagree with you I looked at the website you posted and did not see the spikey things you are talking about they look for the most part like a normal slightly longer crop and I also disagree with you about crops and whips being used as punishment I think they can be a great tool as long as you are not abusive with it just like anything else
