Parks letter sent by a 19 year old college student
    Dear Senators,

I am outraged and horrified that New York State is considering closing our parks. As a young person on Long Island, I know what it is like to have our outdoor activity options limited. The parks are the only place where my friends and I can go to relax, be outside in Nature, and get some physical activity, free of charge. I frequently go for walks, hikes, bike rides and horseback riding in the parks, whether it's with my friends, my family or one particular companion. The parks are a vital part of Long Island's atmosphere - they provide a critical link between society and the environment that doesn't exist most places on Long Island. Furthermore, they are a wonderful conduit for introducing young children to the beauty and value of nature. The parks are especially valuable to families looking for a beautiful, fun thing to do together on a budget. Movies, shopping trips, dining out and amusement parks are all expensive; parks are supposed to be there whenever citizens want to just pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the environment of the place they call home. Without our parks, Long Island just wouldn't be the same - many Senators are worried about the exodus out of New York State and especially off of Long Island, but, believe me, as a young college student, closing the parks is definitely not a good way to stop all the educated young people from fleeing as quickly as we can. The parks were always my favorite thing about New York, and I know I am not the only one.

Finally, If we are to learn anything at all from the current global climate change crisis, it should be that, for future generations to survive at all, human beings need to be closer to and have a greater understanding of the natural world we inhabit. If there aren't any parks and wild places for the public to visit at their will, how are people supposed to learn this message?

As your constituent and a voting member of the community, I urge to please do everything you can to keep the budget from passing on April first and to keep our parks open.

Thank you for your time and consideration. This issue is of utmost importance to me and to many people in the region.

Sincerely,

------

From Janine-
It does pay to send them to college! I might ad here that she sent this letter to everyone on the mail list that was posted earlier on the board.

I have a broody hen who wants to hatch out some eggs deperately.
I am looking for some fertile Easter Egger eggs to see if she can do it (and add some color to my egg basket)the eggs do not have to be pure EE (my chickens are all mixes as it is), I just want some blue, pink, olive etc.. eggs. I am willing to pay say $20 for 4-6 eggs and would prefer local to shipping through the mail.

  save our parks
We need help trying to save the Long Island Parks that the state is planning to close down. Everyone can help to save our parks by calling your local assemblyman, our local senators, and our governor David A. Paterson. The only way that we can keep these parks open is by raising awareness about the problem and then letting our representatives know about our discontent. Below is the listing of the contact information for our representatives so lets get to work! April 1st is just around the corner!

New York State Assembly:

  And Then They Dance...
It's 3 AM and our 14 year old dog is barking aimlessly - to go out..just to get lost in the yard.
She wets my rug..right in front of me.
She has no shame. She's mostly blind.
I'm lucky just to cut the knots out of her coat, and hope she makes it off alive - off the grooming table.
Cortisone flows like wine - for her aches and pains.

Tomorrow will be the last day.
No more.

Tomorrow comes...

She can see me out in the bright sunshine, and she playfully pretends to nip my fingers. She hops back a few steps ...barks....and smiles. One snaggletooth smile.

And then they dance....

The horse is on three legs more than four.
Some days he wheezes like a freight train.
He's 25. He eats Nursing Home mash.
Curls are all over his once sleek coat due to too little thyroid.
His knees are knobby, and he's dog ugly.
He just nipped me in the rear because his feet hurt. A little nip..a please don't hurt me.
He walks like House.

Tomorrow will be the last day.
No more.

Tomorrow comes...

He snuffs my hair and breathes a grassy hello up my nose. He follows me..when he never does.
Out of nowhere, he goes and gives a little buck and rolls, shaking the grass off his wooly coat. He snorts.

And then, they dance....

It's a Chicken! Get over it. She's skinny as a rail, and you haven't seen an egg in months.
The others pick on her now.
The rooster isn't even interested in her anymore, and he's always interested in any gal.
She's lying on the ground now soaking up what sun she can - and a hen passing by pecks her comb.
Her beautiful comb, once bright red, now..almost gone.

Tomorrow will be the last day.
No more.

Tomorrow comes.

She has a burst of energy and delights in finding a night crawler. It hangs from her beak. The others try to rush her - but she remembers. Remembers the spot where the others can't find her. She limps fast.
The rooster leans against her - later in the run... and protects her.... he lashes out at a fresh hen.
An old misshapen egg is found in a nest that only she loved. She settles down on it..hoping.

And then they dance.

Damn cat. Litter box is empty, but my pile of laundry is full.
She can't jump up on her favorite spot anymore, so we lift her.
She wails through the night because she is lost and can't hear us.
If she has five teeth - that's a lot.
We feed all canned food now.
She sleeps all day.
She is twenty one. She's had a good life.

Tomorrow will be the last day.
No more.

Tomorrow comes...

An unraveled string from my pants - trails the floor after my boots. She pounces. She rubs against my leg for the second meal of the day.
Settled on the couch, she makes it up this time, and purrs and sings a lullaby for me and her.

And then they dance.....

To: heavensentforever - Re: "Hot Lips"
I just read your post from last year about who to avoid at swap meets due to her stealing and reselling your stuff. So I offer you some advice...

How to spot a Crazy:

1) They steal your stuff and try to sell it (she tried to sell me your saddle by the way...)

2) They threaten to sue random horse show moms, and probably everyone else too

3) Addicted to usage of herb, I mean herbs

4) bright red lipstick is usually a dead giveaway

5) they call you in the middle of the night, drunk/high/god knows what, asking you to take over for the 60y/o "girl" that she hired to replace you while you were getting your tonsils out

6) they try to teach a western-broke ranch horse to jump by throwing it over jumps, breaking the jumps and nearly breaking the horses legs

7) they tell you that you dont know how to ride

and my personal favorite:

8) wearing show clothes inappropriate for time period

Hope you get your stuff back eventually. And remember, you can't fix crazy.

    MADNESS
Share
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 8:28am
Why do I like horses? I reckon I must be mad. My mother wasn’t horsey And neither was my dad. But the madness hit me early And it hit me like a curse. And I’ve never gotten better In fact I’ve gotten worse. My stables are immaculate. My house is like a hovel. Last year for my birthday I got a brand new shovel. I hardly read a paper But I know who’s sold their horse And I wouldn’t watch the news If Mr. Ed was on, of course. One eye’s always on the heavens But my washing waves in vain As I rush to get the horses in In case it’s gonna rain. And though they’re wearing 15 rugs, The best that you can get, I bring them in to keep them dry While I get soaking wet. I spend up every cent I’ve got On horsey stuff for sure. I buy fancy rugs and fancy rugs, And then I by some more. I should have had that hair cut Or bought that nice blue shirt At least it wouldn’t be n ow Ripped to shreds and in the dirt. I can’t make a bloody sponge cake I don’t even try But I can back a truck and trailer In the twinkling of an eye. It’s pants and R.M. boots That I live in night and day And that smell of sweaty horses Just doesn’t wash away. Once in every… now and then I can dress up for a ball. Make up and a hairdo With high heel shoes and all. I ache from long forgotten falls. My knees have got no skin. My toes have gone a funny shape. >From being squashed again. But late at night, when all is still And I’ve gone to give them hay, I touch their velvet softness And my worries float away. They give a gentle nicker And they nuzzle through my hair And I know it’s where my heart is More than anywhere.

  park closings
I attended the NYNE meeting at Connetquot this evening, we had a good turnout. We all need to become actively involved and make sure OUR tax monies are used to preserve the parks and beaches on Long Island. A state legislator once told me that the most attention is paid to written letters from individuals and phone calls. Email is good but letters are better. The recent US Supreme Court decision will have a tremendous and damaging effect on our electoral process. There are now virtually no restrictions on the amounts of money banks and other corporations can spend funding candidates. There will be MILLIONS spent on vicious ad campaigns against candidates who are for average working people. The big multinational corporations are solidly against open space preservation, environmental protection and consumer protection regulations. WE need to put apathy and petty differences aside and save our way of life before Long Island is nothing but a sea of traffic, condos and Walmarts. Nobody is going to do it for us. Please stay informed about state and local politics and attend as many rallies and meetings on these issues as you can.

  ASPCA - CANTER
Ponytales. I know this annoye you but the funds go to the NATIONAL CANTER organization and individual CANTER groups can apply for the funds. So no, not the Michigan CANTER solely.
Yes, other groups will also get funds. But they are mostly for ex racers.
CANTER would like to use the funds to rehab horses so they can go on to useful careers.

Several other boards have reported on this topic and none of them report any restrictions on use of the funds to CANTER owned horses only.
I have emailed a friend at the National group for clarification.

But this is the type of program that I have no problem contributing to. The auctions, not so much.

But I'm sure you must have noticed that the intent is to retrain and rehome ex racers BEFORE it gets to the point of the auctions.

So again, retrain, rehome as opposed to hoarding.

  parks and other issues
apparently long island is having some serious issues with state of new york.i'm seeing all these posts about parks being closed and it makes no sence to me. also in my school thers been talk about getting rid of the musical and the one act play festival and jv sports and a lot of the art and music classes. this is all happening becouse the state gives long island school less than half of the money they give the rest of the state!! they seem to think that becouse its longs island and used to be a vacation place for weathy people that we have money and they couldnt be more wrong. everyone is being effected by this reccesion. (my teacher told me this) my school will be writing letters to the state about the budget but i think we should all do something about the parks as well.

  HELMETS
There are soooooooooooooooooooooooo many reasons why people won't wear helmets while riding horses, riding bikes, skateboards skiing etc. The next you go out for a on a horse, a bike, a skateboard,skiing...if another wants to come along wanting to ride his or her horse, skateboard, bike etc....please tell them I love you too much to lose you...WEAR A HELMET!!!!! If they give you an excuse, don't ride with 'em. I know I may start alot of controversy over this, but I stand next to my convictions....I always say....."Just like a seatbelt, a helmet may not save your life, but at least you did your best to protect your head using a astm sei certified helmet while riding a mobile partner...be it a HORSE, A BIKE, A SKATEBOARD...etc....
p.s. for children under the age of 14, it is required that they wear astm sei certified helmets...and still parents don't heed that...doesn't matter the age of a person...it matters that we all want to age..that way we can go on living and enjoying!(:

  Our Parks...A Disgrace.
I belong to a photography club, and we were talking about the closing of the parks this week.

This is big trouble.

On Caleb Smith, conjecture is; that condos may go up around the lake. It makes sense as time goes on - and prime real estate sits there.
If Connetoquoit closes during the week, exactly what are the horse owners - who made a specific choice to live there with their equines...supposed to do? The horses are going to go nutty without exercise - if they are trail loving horses...and the owners too.. no doubt ....
"Ah, a long day at work, let me saddle up Louie...uh...no"....

No more smell of salty chlorine at Jones Beach? How utterly sad...such a memory. The roads at West End now are all potholes.

Orient Point..the North End of our Island..closed????
Deer can be pesky critters, but it was so nice to see them back at Caleb after an absence for many years.
No more canoeing down the Nissequogue either?

Yes, we are flooding Congress on this.
Please try to get every person you know to write.

Eleven Million Dollars..no doubt Paterson used more than that for his personal entertainment...sorry.. but that is a mere pittance, to keep our parks open.
I guess the Yankee tickets were more important.

Levy Urges NY Officials to Keep Parks Open via Private Partnerships

Says Proposed Closure of State Parks Can be Avoided through Private-Sector Role

Hauppauge , NY – Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is urging New York officials to enlist the private sector to ensure that proposed closures of state parks are averted so that residents can enjoy the full benefits of all state parks facilities.

The State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation today released its recommended list of closures and service reductions “in order to achieve its 2010-11 agency savings target and help address the State’s historic fiscal difficulties.” (See list of targeted Long Island parks, at bottom.)

Levy said state park closures may be able to be avoided if the New York brought in the private sector to run parks facilities. Accordingly, Levy is urging the state to issue a Request for Proposals seeking private-sector bids to operate jeopardized parks.

“The closure of pristine and immensely valued state parks could possibly be averted by allowing private interests to bid to operate these parks,” said Levy. “Such an opportunity could enable these private operators to set admission and concession fees as a way of balancing their financial objectives and ensuring their success.”

As an added attraction, Levy said, private-sector parks operators could be allowed to consider parks sponsorship/naming opportunities as a potential revenue source or to advertise their own name as they choose during the period of operation.

In 2009, state parks and historic sites across the U.S. cut back hours, staffing and services because of state budgets squeezed by the economic downturn. In New York, 100 of the state’s 178 state parks and 35 historic sites reduced services, from closing pools and beaches to shortening hours of operation. But none of the parks or sites closed entirely.

  Not Quite
The SPCA did not give "CANTER" 1 million. The SPCA is giving 1 million to various TB retirement and re-homing facilities over the course of several years. CANTER Michigan is one of the recipients and it is NOT for the trainer owned portion of CANTER, it is for the ADOPTION portion of CANTER....those horses go with contracts just like mine and any other rescue.

  Rescuing
I agree with Ponytales & have seen what goes on at Camelot. The only other auction I haven't been to is Unadilla, but I plan on it at the end of the month. Yes, it surely is tough & a tear jerker at times, but it's gives you a much better perspective once you've attended & then you know most of the "truths" behind the actual auction scene.
There are several reputable rescue groups near me (just 2 hrs from LI) that do attend Unadilla, New Holland & other auctions. They all work together in regularly bailing horses that are desperately in need, some just hrs before the "big truck" leaves for that "place" we all fear of.
All I can say is I commend them for their hard work & efforts day in & day out. If I didn't have a full time job & animals of my own to take care of I'd be right at the front lines.
Also, if you are a private individual, rescue group or a group of ppl wanting to help...make sure you have the funds to fully care for a rescue horse long term, and not just try to get rid of it when things become too expensive (this too I have seen happen). Make sure you have all doors open when helping rescue a horse, it's only fair to the animal. And don't just keep taking in horse after horse because you feel bad for them, but then allow them to sit, watch their feet overgrow, run out of hay, or forget about needed surgical procedures...all things that cost $$$ but all things needed when caring for a large animal. Chipping in & helping rescue organizations is a great thing & I urge more of you to help if you can....Be safe everyone.

Parks are set to Close April 1 NO JOKE
    Hello from Sharyn,

I hope you are all aware that we are in real danger of our parks closing! It is not a joke and this is very real.

Someone sent out this e mail - I was on a mass list of people who received it. The lady who wrote this I will not disclose who she is (she can take credit if she likes). She is very savvy and knows what time of day it is. What she wrote scared me to death.

Read below:
______________________________________________
In a message dated 3/3/2010 8:44:44 A.M. Eastern Standard Time,
I agree that we should be part of a State iniative, however, keep in mind that the rest of NY State has more land available for agriculture than we have on LI. I believe that the NYS Horse Council advocates 1 horse per acre. That would be a disaster for us here on LI. We need a local voice here on Long Island - whether it's through NSHA or forming a coalition of equine groups in our area.

  Clarification
I'm not saying don't bail horses Lynn, BUT I am saying you may want to stick to bailing horses that are going to LEGITIMATE homes. About 60% of those being pulled by a certain "group" are showing up back at other auctions, on Craigs List, or in terribly inadequate homes. Someone that is on another list that I am on had a very good analogy:
I'm a firefighter, I pull you from a burning building and then throw you in front of a tractor trailer traveling at 60 MPH down the highway....am I still a hero since I pulled you from the burning building?
I don't "dislike" Frank, but he is what he is which is a Killbuyer. Unlike most of the other auctions houses (except Sugar Creek) Frank also ships to slaughter and is a dealer, so any horse that goes through his auction is in danger of being shipped to slaughter if the bid is not high enough. At the other auctions there are outside KB's and Dealers there that bid but the owners of the auction houses do not bid and send horses to slaughter.

  Rescues -Adopt or Buy?
Well it looks like the ASPCA thinks CANTER is doing something right because they just gave them $1MM.

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/aspca-announces-million-dollar-rescuing-racers-initiative-85954517.html

From the article:
"Plans include expanding direct intake programs, incorporating physical therapy/rehabilitation programs, renovating facilities to accommodate more horses, creating voucher programs to increase adoptions, and implementing training programs for thoroughbreds to ready them for second careers."

Note the reference to second careers. That should allow a lot more "rinse and repeat' situations.

Actually, many rescue are invloved in New Holland...i am part of those groups too on fb and ever week there a pictures of horse that are taken from new holland for adoption or pictures of horss from a broker's lot where rescues go to tke pics to post to save the horses..some times we see pics on Fb and no one takes the horse and it does go to canada..but the rescues try..there is al unadilla rescue group too just no pics..like britt said..but the rescue takes whatthey can and then adopts out..i know i tout facebook alot on here but thats how i stay up on the current activities in our horse community..There are also rescue groups on there that are postng bail for cats and dogs on kill shelters across the country..they r bailing out small animals instead of having them gassed,,which is how they eithanize in MANY states..and those groups operate the same as the horse rescue..pics are on there of the cats and dogs too...and just for the record,Frank is not a bad guy..he is not responsible for those horses..he is a business man and wants to see those horses adopted out,,yes he has to keep some in pen #10 so there is a full load for the trucks on sunday but thats the way it goes..he didnt not bring the horses there he is just rnning his business...any horses he does bring in get aucined off to new homes and from there it is STILL not his responsibility,,horses get slaughtered cuz there are too many,,lets do what we can to save what we can ut get over the fact that somewhere some horse is gonna go to slaughter..we cant save them all and its time for everyone to accept that

OK- I am confused. Please educate me. From your post it sounds like you do not like Frank? Not that I blame you, but at least at Camelot the horses get a chance to be saved? Where at New Holland and Unadilla any horses not bought on the spot ship straight to slaughter? Am I getting this right? When I read some of the people taking horses fron Camelot they seem pretty legit. At least I pray that they are. I would hate to bail one only to have it end up in another bad situation. Should I not bail? I am crying over #383. Halflinger baby. I would even pay for future gelding for him as someone I spoke to said they are only taking fillies because the extra cost in gelding. Please get back with the answers. Your #1 fan.

  AFHR??
I beg your pardon but I have been rescuing horses at Unadilla for a very long time. Long before people decided to throw money at Frank Carper and send the "rescued" horses off to god knows where. Infact I am scheduled to got to Unadilla tomorrow, just like I did 2 weeks prior and will every other Friday. The reason why people do not do this at Unadilla and New Holland are because Unadilla and New Holland auctions are not owned by a Dealer/Kill Buyer. The Chambers boys dont buy up horses at their auction to ship to slaughter, once in a while they may buy a quality horse for their personal use or resale down the line. You either buy the horse in the ring at Unadilla or it is lost, there is no week to take pictures (which are strictly forbidden at both Unadilla and New Holland BTW), descriptions, and beg for people to send money. You need to go to the sale, money in hand, trailers in tow and stalls waiting for QT. We pulled 8 horses 2 weeks ago and had no empty spots left in our barns or trailers.

  Beagle for Adoption
I am posting this for a friend who found a Beagle type dog and must find a home for it. He has 2 large dogs and just can't take on another pet. The dog has a micro-chip, he was adopted out of Riverhead Shelter. When the owner was contacted by the shelter they said they didn't want him any longer :( My friend was told to bring him to Brookhaven Shelter-not an option. He has contacted all the local no-kill shelters and none of them can take him at this time.
He is a sweet dog, probably less than a year old and very shy. I just think he needs to be socialized and trained.
If anyone is interested in this sweetie please contact me. I can e-mail pictures.

  Adoption contracts
I wanted to share another look on the contract department for rescues. You may approve a home, have a signed contract. Then a few months down the line you go to check up on them and find a boarded up house and that they picked up, took the horse with them. Nothing you can do. By the time you can even re-locate them (pretty much slim to none chance) the horse could already have been re-sold, sent to auction, numerous things can, and HAVE happened. So what do you do? You sue them , hire some one to track them down ? That doesn't help the horse if its already gone. Contracts don't protect any horse 100%. I never adopt or even sell a horse without a contract and i keep in touch through email every so many weeks etc. which becomes harder the more horses you have helped. but people loose touch.. get busy .. so many things are possible this day and age. no one cares if their signature is on some paper. once the horse is gone its gone... nothing you can do . Its sad but its the truth.

All of my rescues, and horses i have sold, are all exactly where they were moved too from here. All very happy and healthy. I couldn't have gotten better homes. They all have contracts and they all email or call me from time to time. I visit them when i can, but not to the point of being annoying or prying. out of all the horses i've helped only one had to be 'siezed' and i took him back home, and with a few months of loving care again, got him a great home. Dropping in on a un-announced visit,is a reason a lot of ppl wont adopt and i've had ppl tell me that. they look at it as theyre keeping YOUR horse and feeding it and loving it , that one day you could decide you want it back or come stop by when ever you want and 'bother' them. Its a privacy thing, neverming nothing to hide.. I know the feeling it gets really annoying.. But its in the animals best intrest to ensure its being cared for as agreed but as i said most rather no strings attached. Im rambling now so i'll stop . Not posting this to cause back and fourth arguments but its the simple truth.

I wish i could save every horse from the kill pen every week but its an impossible task for all of us. Half of these horses will end up right back there, or on craigslist like a lot already have. Its mean, its sad to say but its the sad truth. These people need to take responsibility for their animals. not just horses.. And camelot is not the only kill auction so i want to know why no ones going to new holland, or unidilla or any of these other auctions and doing this... camelot is nothing special. i think its really unfair to the other horses in the other auctions to be shipped out b/c so many ppl are doing this for ONE auction. Granted you can only do so much but why dont some of these people spread out... new holland and unidilla arent TOO much further from camelot. Its a lot to take on to begin with but just food for thought.

Enjoy this wonderful weather we have today with the horse(s) you love. I look at the pages w. the pictures of these lost sould, and as much as it brings tears to my eyes, i walk out back and kiss my two rescues that are both safe and already been through hell.

And please, Remember don't take on a rescue if you cannot handle it. What you get is not always what they tell you it is. And thats a FACT.

  Canter/Rescues
Just a different point of view.
Rescues have no guarantee that whoever 'adopts' from them will keep the horse forever. And in fact, it may not be in the horses best interest. If they can be placed in a show home they will likely get better vet, farrier and nutrituional support then they would in a backyard setting. Simply because a good trainer will have more experience in horse care. Shoe horses are well taken care of.
If an individual adopts and has a budget that only allows them to keep one horse then that's it. They won 't be adopting anymore horses for the life of the one they have.
If a trainer purchases a Canter horse they put some training on it and sell it for hopefully a profit. They reinvest the initial outlay into another OTTB./ Rinse and repeat. Over the lifetime of one horse they may have helped 20 horses instead of one.
Limited resources requires creative thinking. And it's good publicity for CANTER and the trainer.
Many rescues are asking for funds. Some of them are hoarders. They never adopt or sell or place anything. Maybe out of a misguided or uneducated position that they don't trust anyone else to do the right thing.
Seriously, if you are taking in more horses then you can place your policies need to be reviewed or you are taking horses that woild be better served with a quick euth.

There are 48 horses available now at the Camelot Auction feedlot.

There are a lot of REALLY nice horses there.

NJ-FEEDLOT-HORSE-RESCUE.COM has pictures and brief descriptions. There is also transport and quarantine info there as well.

Spring is coming. Take a look to see if there is a project horse there that you can take a chance on.

The economy has affected us all. The horses are no different. Some of these guys ended up in the feedlot because their owners were affected by the economy. Take a chance and save a life.

  Canter
Canter is a posting site that facilitates OTTB to private homes. If you purchase a horse through the owner listed, that is usually it. Finished, done. There are some horses that Canter purchases themselves to keep out of slaughter and those that are adopted out do have a contract as well as references checked. I have two of them.

  Canter & Rescues
If you get a horse from CANTER and you decide to sell it, you are supposed to call CANTER and let them know. That was my experience and things may have changed. CANTER horses get a second chance, but they do not have a contract or a real safety net.

Rescue horses should have a contract between the adopter and the rescue. This gives the rescue horse a safety net -- if an adopter falls on hard times and can't keep the rescue horse they are bound by contract to return the horse to the rescue. This is to protect the horse.

This is a very hard time for many horse owners across the U.S. -- there are so many horses that are falling onto hard times through no fault of their own. When people are losing their homes, having problems feeding their families, have lost their jobs, the horse (who is considered a luxury now) has to go. If they can't find a buyer and they can't find a rescue to take them the can very well end up at auction. These are sad times - support legitimate horse rescues.

  Shelters ---- Wendy
Wendy I agree with you 100%... I have a corgi who i bought from a breeder who i found, and went above and beyond!! she had the bitch and she bred to the best dog she could find for her.. I was asked about my home and previous animals and then i was invited into her home to come meet the puppies and her brood of corgis since she rescued and fostered corgis. When i picked my puppy and gave her my deposit I was told there was a neuter/spay contract and i would not be given his AKC papers till she received a fax from my vet that he was neutered, then i was told i could come when he was 10 weeks and she never ever let her puppies go before then. When i came 4 weeks later to come pick him up i was given a folder of all things corgi and she told me that no matter what if i could one day no longer afford him, take care of him or anything that would make me give him up to contact her and she would take him in and either rehome him or keep him no matter how old he was..She also had the bitch OFA, CERF and other genetic testing done and the dog also had the same(it was included in my folder but also available to me when i contacted her originally).. I still have the records.. 7 years later I still talk with my corgis breeder and give her updates on him, and since then she has only had 4 litters(with 2 different bitches)she also spays her bitches after 4 or 5 years old..

My other dog a lab mix is a Huntington pound rescue who i walked in the shelter one day on a whim and as soon as i turned the corner i knew she would be mine forever and 9 years later she is still my little girl....

LOL i think i lost track of what i was going to say but the point is do your research on breeders and make sure you go to the breeders home and see the conditions.. and when it comes to rescues.. go to the pounds those dogs and cats need you the most because they have an expiration date stamped to their forehead...

  Pawing
Pawing is sometimes your horses way of telling you something. I'm bored, I don't have enough turn out time, I need more hay to munch on if you're going to lock me up for hours at a time etc. One of my horses would start pawing in the wash stall after 10 minutes...he was just bored and wanted me to hurry a little. Yes he was told to stop, but you get the picture...it was his way of talking. This was the same horse that pawed the second I got to the barn because he was excited to go ride. I always find more turnout and more hay cuts down on many of the undesirable things horses do. Of course you may already have these things in place. Just some suggestions...hope it helps a little.

  Horse that paws in stall...
For the horse that paws... if putting down rubber mats doesn't work, there is a product which consists of a 1 piece stall 'mattress' system that you can install which attaches to the walls and a horse cannot shift:

http://comfortstall.com/CS_Products_Comfortstall.html

After some shopping around, I just purchased it myself recently bc my horse has developed hock sores & I preferred not to go the 10"-of-bedding route. If you call the company they will send you samples of the product. The rubber top cover is quite durable, but you can double ck with the company to verify if it would be OK for heavy pawers.

I've heard positive results for it helping horses with recurrent hock sores at least, & am very optimistic about that! Good luck.

  The "Big" Shelter
After working in 2 very large ER animal hospitals on LI I can tell you that we treated MANY puppies and dogs from this place. We also did have one come in with Distemper, who ultimately died despite her owners best efforts (they only owned her 48 hours before she was brought in). Many came in with parvo, and pneumonia. It would costs these people THOUSANDS to treat these poor sick puppies and most of the times they died anyway.

  Sally-
The reason we do not "sell" horses is because when we rescue a horse we take on a lifetime commitment to keeping that horse safe. If we were to sell it to a trainer who then sold it to a client, how would we be able to make sure it stayed safe? What if it became injured and the client dumped it at an auction? How did we do that horse any justice then? There are plenty of org's that promote horses for sale, like Canter so if a trainer is looking for sale projects then those are the places to go- Canter, the auctions, Craigslist, etc.

  buying from rescues
I've had many people try to "buy" horses from my rescue. My anwser is always no. The point of my rescue is keep these horses safe forever. If you train it and sell it to a "good home" you never know what happens to the horse in 20 years. I keep track of all my horses. I promise to them the day they step off the trailer that they will never be in danger again.

If I sold horses I should call myself a broker not a rescue...

I've seen many of the CANTER horses end up in kill pens weeks after they are bought. It's a great program but not all of those horses have happy endings.

In order to keep my horses safe they go out under a contract, no exceptions.

  Horse "Pawing" & making holes
My horse has a "pawing" problem and stands at the front of his stall destroying it. He makes huge holes! Im afraid he will hurt himself honestly. Ive just recently put down a very large thick mat so he couldn't dig himself into a hole. However, from him being so large and digging for such a long period of time, no matter how much i fill the hole under the mat he still stands in a ditch/hole .. any suggestions? How do I correct this hole problem I am having.. ?? It really is a pain. :-(

  shelter pet successes
We got our dog from Kent Animal Shelter (Calverton) 10 yrs ago and every single time we take her out someone asks "What kind of dog is that?" because she is unique, and she is a mutt. Kent pulled her from the Riverhead pound (a kill pound), she was a stray found on the highway. It would almost be worth doing genetic testing on her to see what mix she is, but it would only serve to satisfy my curiosity, since I wouldn't try to breed her "mix" when there are so many adoptable animals needing homes. She is a wonderful loyal pet, and there are many like her waiting for homes, so just give the small shelters and pounds a try. She still runs around like a puppy at 11 or 12 yrs old! Our cat came from Southampton Animal Shelter, he's great, and recently we got another kitten from bideawee. Turned out he's deaf (white cat...)but he is such a funny cat, he thinks he's a dog, and we are entertained daily by his antics. I would never have gotten a deaf cat had I known, but we are so bonded with this sweet cat now we can't imagine not having him. So, my experience with shelters has been all positive in the long run!

  rescues VS puppies
As a veteran rescuer, I have personally rescued 1000+ dogs in 30 years. I have a few thoughts on this thread. I believe the best resource is petfinder.com. You can locate town shelters, private no-kill shelters and small rescue operations and individuals that house dogs in private homes. On Long Island we have many no kill shelters- Little Shelter, Last Hope, Kent, ARF, Bide-a-Wee, For Our Friends and others. There are dozens of breed specific and all breed rescue groups. The breed rescues can also sometimes recommend a breeder if you must have a puppy, or at least tell you who to avoid. Many breeders have slick, fancy websites with gorgeous photos, but are essentially backyard puppy mills with sickly dogs.
This whole idea that a "private breeder" = a quality puppy is patently false. Especially in the case of toy breeds, that nice suburban home may literally have 40-50 debarked dogs living in cramped, filthy cages in the basement. My albeit jaded opinion is that maybe 10% of breeders are ethical and legitimate. A good breeder takes a lifetime interest and responsibility for every puppy they produce. They will always take it back and rehome it, even 10 years later. They do not sell pups younger than 8 weeks and they carefully screen and question buyers and use a contract. The parents have extensive breed specific health testing- at the very least OFA (for med/large breeds) and CERF. A good breeder frequently does not have the sire on premises. They bring the bitch to the best male they can find. A good breeder is an active member of the local and National Clubs for their breed. They do more than just crank out litters. They don't have more than 2 or 3 breeds. I also believe that an ethical breeder should be involved in rescue for their breed, even if its just to make a donation. For every puppy sold, a rescue dog loses a potential home. Puppy buyers need to do their homework instead of impulse buying. Purebreds have many many more medical issues than mixed breeds. For instance, a full 50% of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are dead of heart disease by age 5. If a breeder tells you their breed or their lines have no problems at all, they are lying. Make sure you can meet the needs of your chosen breed- its exercise, training, grooming, dietary and medical needs. Just because a dog is cute does not mean its suitable for you. Go deeper than age and appearance. Lastly, please don't buy the false media hype that pits and pit mixes are not good family pets. Some have dog aggression but many do not. They have less human aggression statistically than many other breeds, including Cockers, Poodles and Shepherds. They are extremely loyal, very intelligent and very easy to train. They need help more than any other breed.

  The BIG Shelter
It's funny how things about "that BIG shelter" are....There are constant rants on CL about them, but I always took it waith a grain of salt because some people have too much time on their hands and spend their day flaming people on there. It is interesting how the folks HERE have had similiar experiences! We went "there" when we were looking, and they have so many volunteers rotating in and our that people really dont know the personalities of the dogs except for what is written on their cards. We just didnt feel comfortable with that, even though the dogs probably were just fine. We went to Little Shelter and were QUITE happy with them, but we were NOT happy with their process for placing dogs (we were "denied" because we didnt have a fenced in yard) even though my husband and I had years of unfenced in dog experience. I get that they have to "weed" people out, but we were the wrong folks to "weed" out. Subsequently, 9 years later, not only do we have a fence, but a horse and goats as well.

We wound up getting our guy via the League for Animal Protection - they work out of the Huntington Shelter which IS a kill shelter, but volunteers would come in on a regular basis (the same volunteers) and work with the dogs so that they can be adopted. We explained what we were looking for, and the volunteer knew what dog would work for us . Granted, she probably didnt know all the dogs in the shelter, but out of the dogs she worked with regularly, she could choose one for us. Our old man is now 11 and enjoying his later years with us, just as much as we have enjoyed the 10 years with him!!

  shelters
Growing up in my family once an animal walked or was carried into our yard, it stayed until it died of old age. That's how we were raised and that's what we still do.

I'm never going to forget the look on my brother's face when he was told he couldn't have that sick black little puppy. I argued with two different managers and got nowhere. I asked if I could adopt the pup was told I could but if I did and gave it to my brother I would be fined $10,000 for fraud.

We had tried Kent,Smithtown and Brookhaven shelters before he gave up. The pup he has now (a beautiful Husky) is spoiled rotten, I pick him up, bring him to my house to play with my girls, then my brother comes to get him.

It breaks my heart to see how animals are treated, how many need homes.....how many die because of stupid rules, breed reputation, ignorance, greed....it's disgusting.

  Pound puppies
I got 2 purebred pomeranians from Huntington Dog Pound in Northport. They are the light of my life. I kept on going there until I found the dogs I wanted. Will never buy another dog! That's just my personal preference. Had dealings with the "larger rescue". They are always "full", never available to take an animal in need.

There are other shelters on Long Island besides the Big One. I worked at Kent in Calverton for years and they hav many wonderful dogs and cats for adoption and they are a no kill! I would check them out if you are looking to adopt.

  re: Animal Shelters
I also had a very bad experience with that certain well-known large shelter years ago. I adopted a beautiful sweet little terrier type girl who was about 6-8 months old. Two days later, she wouldn't eat and was so sick I brought her to my vet. His immediate diagnosis after one look and a description of her symptoms - distemper. He told me to take her back because it would cost a fortune to treat and he wasn't sure he could even save her. And, don't even think about taking in another dog for at least 6 months because the germs would still be in the house. THEIR vet laughed and said she only has worms, she's had all her vaccines so it can't be distemper. I left her with them to be treated. I called twice a day for 3 days to see how she was - the staff kept telling me she's doing fine. On the 4th day, I called to see when I could pick her up and was told that she was put down. "Why?" I asked. "Oh, she had distemper and was dying so we put her to sleep". Guess the person that answered the phone that day didn't know the script for callers. To make things worse, 3 and 6 months later, I got follow-up calls to "see how my new puppy was doing".

I later adopted from a private rescue. My current dog was adopted from Little Shelter in Huntington. The staff there took the time to find out about my lifestyle and work, how big my house and yard were, other pets I had, etc. so they could advise me on what adult dogs they had that might be possible matches. They even "cat-tested" one of the dogs I considered adopting the first trip I made there because I have 2 senior indoor cats. When I finally chose a puppy who was cat-friendly, they checked with my vet and two dog-owner friends to make sure I took care of my pets before completing the adoption. I've had several friends also adopt from Little Shelter, both dogs and cats, and so far all of us are happy with our adopted pets.

  SPIRIT
Regarding big show barns bringing their horses to auctions: You are correct about that. They also get dumped after summer camps end, but at a recent Camelot auction, a beautiful healthy horse was dropped off by her owner because she had a baby and the horse had to go. She knew it could possibly end up on the meat truck. The horse did end up in the feedlot but was thankfully rescued. I check the posts at Camelot on Wednesday nites now, and it is very draining to see these poor horses, ponies and mules looking a bit confused and thrown in together when they are sometimes kicked and bit. As soon as finances pick up, I will be helping to bail horses from Camelot, so far they have all been saved for about eight or nine weeks in row now. I know there has been much controversy about horse slaughter, as many pro slaughter arguments say they will have excess of horses. They also compare other livestock to being killed for meat and this is where I have a problem. Show me a cow that gave hundreds of kids riding lessons for years and years. Or that show pony that took it's rider to blue ribbons. The camp horses that did endless trail rides for yahoo weekend riders. The Amish are always dumping their used up plow and buggy horses for slaughter. The whole concept of horses meeting their end in a miserable inhumane way after years of service for humans is beyond my comprehension.

  park closing question
I'm reading that Connetquot is slated to be closed during the week, if the idiot in Albany has his way. Does that mean no trail riding allowed during the week?? Its bad enough that they want to shut these parks down, but for them to make it no riding either during the week, its just ridiculous. So i was just curious if anyone knew if we could still ride. Not that it matters, i'd still ride there anyway. They're gonna have to call a cop to have me arrested, because i'm not gonna stop riding in there. Knowing that the idiot is not running for re election, there has to be something we can do, other than the rally's.

Destiny- re: horse left at auction
95% of the time the horses at auctions are not brought there by their owners. When owners cant keep a horse anymore they often "retire" it to a school program or maybe they sell or give it to a local sale barn. They might be told what a wonderful home their horse is going to "out west" or something along those lines. The owners often believe what they are told and never follow up. In reality the horse will be brought right to a sale or worked for a few years and then brought to a sale. The places doing this are not secret, hidden barns. They are the ones many Long Islanders ride and show at! People assume that because they are well known barns or because they have helped horse rescues, they would only be telling the truth. I no longer associate with barns like that and I wish that others would consider asking questions and actually following up! So in reality many people that talk about how horrible sales/slaughterhouses are, have actually (unknowlingly) sent their own horse there.

  Shelter
Aww that's so sad that they wouldnt let him adopt it. A friend of mine had trouble adopting a kitten from a shelter. They didntlike that he worked 8 hours a day. But if one doesnt work how dos wone pay for the adopted animal and the home you both live in? Ridiclous!. I always adopt my pets, however, my heeler did come from a lady in Virginia who does alot of horse trading up in NY and breeds heelers for fun. He didnt cost anymore than what it would have cost to adopt a dog and she has somoeone drop the puppies off at new holland for adoption. So i felt like i was kinda saving a pup from an unsure home even though he did come from a breeder. I know someone who knows the lady and she is not a puppy mill. I felt kind of bad for buying this dog and i wont do it again. But in my defense, ALL my animals includng my horses have been rescues. And buying my heeler was nice cuz we got a call on a thursday saying pups were coming in to hew holland on sunday and our friend could pick him up with a load of horses coming upstate. So we said yes, paid the money and got the puppy by monday i mean, not sunday. Anyway, please adopt and neuter. Thanx =)

  Major Shelter on LI...
That Very Large Shelter on LI.....
I've also had two bad experiences with them and a friend of mine had a nightmare trying to adopt a companion pet for her mother.
Another friend saw a dog on their website that she liked. When she went in to get the dog it wasn't available and all they wanted to show her was pit bull mix puppies. Bait and Switch. And in all cases after being rude and refusing to allow an adoption they had the nerve to ask for donations. They adopt out very few animals.
They've declined me because I had a pet die. Yes, two dogs died of old age and I've had a few horses die (because I keep many of my retired horses for the rest of their life).
They've also declined me because I limp slightly when tired and I'm retired.
Although they do have a nice blurb about connecting with Seniors they really don't do any of that stuff.
I'll be purchasing a dog in the near future from a breeder. No wacky shelters for me.

Question for Horse Rescues
Why do you not allow clients to buy horses? You are losing a large market by this practice. If a trainer could buy a horse, put some training on it and sell it to a show home they could simply repeat the process with the proceeds of the horse they just sold. Many horses could be helped this way with only a small capital outlay.
This is why show trainers in most cases will have nothing to do with rescues and instead buy from CANTER trainer listings if they are looking for an OTTB as a show prospect.
This type of relationship would be good advertising for a rescue. Lots of success stories and repeat clients.

  Dor's AJ - re shelter
Any of the town shelter's would have adopted to your brother in a heartbeat. I agree with you about some rescues. I've had a great pet person been turned down for adoption because they had declawed cats at home. Are they kidding? I had a neighbor be denied adoption from a rescue because he had adopted a dog from North Shore a year previous and returned it because it wasn't working out in his home. That does happen. There are great rescues, and some that are just too picky. If your brother had persisted, I'm sure he would have been able to find a rescue begging to adopt to him. My three cats and my horse are all adopted from rescues.

  RE: Shelter Story
I don't know anything about Last Chance Shelter, but a well know large shelter here on LI is just one big money maker for it's corporate bigwigs. It is very rich. It is a Long Island Shelter that should be helping Long Island homelss animals until we have no more homeless animals here. Instead, they go and get animals from remote places due to their notariety, and get TONS of donations from all over the country. They claim to be a no kill shelter too. No, they don't kill the animals that don't adopt out, they send them to the POUND!!!! Don't support these money suckers. Support your small local, private rescues. there are many people who rescue who are not looking to do anything but SAVE THE ANIMALS!!!Many rescues shoot themselves in the foot. They deny very eligible adopters. Shame on them. Every adoption won't work out,but it's worth a try at least. Every dog or cat won't fit into every situation and it might be a mismatch at times, but letting a good home go is preposterous. The rescues must have an open policy to take back any animal that doesn't fit in. That doesn't mean another one won't. A good breeder will take back any dog that doesn't work out for any reason. They can even guarantee what you are getting. There is also a reason for good breeders of quality dogs with good temperaments. Everyone has the right to get what they want, just a buddy or a special type of buddy.

  My shelter story
I have nothing against shelters, I have four dogs three of which are rescues from various places. But however my brother did have a problem adopting from North Shore and Last Chance Animal rescue.

We went to North Shore first, he found a puppy he fell in love with. It was sick but he was willing to take it anyway despite eye infectionsm resperatory infections and a skin problem. he wanted that pup. We filled out the forms and was told he was DENIGHED!

My brother is 57 years old, has worked in the same place for well over 30 years, owns his own home, his backyard is fenced with a six foot stockade and cemented behind it is a chainlink fence. He was denighed because 25 YEARS ago he had a dog that wasn't nuetered. He hasn't had another dog since then.

Last Chance told him no because he works an 8 hour day and didn't care he works locally and can go home whenever he wanted.

We did check out the pounds, but as you said we found mostly pits or pit mixes. He finally bought a dog from a private home and is at last happy. He had wanted to save a life as I drum into everyone that's looking for a new family member, but what can an honest animal loving person do if they get told NO, you can't adopt you live alone, work, had a full bred whole dog a lifetime ago and want another dog to love?

Buy one. Last option.

We went to a private home, no puppy mill. I wouldn't allow him to purchase from a store and pay those outrages prices for sickly pups. His dog will have the life of royalty, too bad the pup he wanted from North Shore, the sick one will never find a home. Who after all wants a sick pup?

He did.
