oking to help you with your horse/barn
Hi, I am 12 yrs old and i am looking for a job relating to horses. I have been riding for 4 yrs, ridden
many different horses and ridden with tons of different trainers. I can be a groom, stable hand, or
exercise your horse/horses for you. I don't mind riding horses that do everything you ask them to
do at all but i love a challenge! I love riding horses that are difficult to ride but they need to be safe
if i am going to be there without supervision. The only things i can think of that i can't do is wrap
horses legs, clip, shave, worm/give medications and feed horses. I am a very willing learner! I get a long with everyone and am a very hard worker!

Searching |

Hello,
I'm a long Island native moving back to the area. In the past I've found work through sites dedicated to horse jobs in a specific location. I have yet to find such a site for the Long Island area. In fact, I keep finding my way back to this site when I search "Long Island Equine Jobs" on GOOGLE. Am I missing a part of this site dedicated to equine employment? Does anyone have any information on sites more related to the equine job industry on Long Island? Any help/ideas would be useful.
Thank you for reading.

Horse people |
| |
|
As a newbie to this board you should be aware that horse people are just like all people. There are good people and not so good people. It is not only on LI but all over. I remember as a young person, a horse was sold to a stable I rode at by an olympic rider who went on to coach our Olympic team until quite recently. The last sound step the horse took was off the van. He was so drugged up with pain meds that as soon as it wore off they had an expensive, very lame pasture pet. Buyer beware. Anyway remember many people may have an axe to grind so take everything with a grain of salt, do your homework and make your own decision.

New Message Board Soon |
| |
|
The moderator job on this site is very hard. It is a 24 hour job and it takes a lot of energy and reading. The moderators do from time to time take off.
Many times things that should not go on do get on. We do the best we can to keep the site clean. A good moderator makes errors sometimes and you can not make everyone happy.
What you need to understand is that mistakes happen and then we do find them and take them off the site. A good moderator will remove things that are not nice. True or false if is not nice so it should be removed.
We do not take sides. Sometimes I think about what would happen if we left the site unattended for too long.
On another note:
We are very close to the new website being completed. I hope you will all love it as much as I do!
I hope it goes smooth, it may launch this week or next. It is being tested on Monday and Tuesday for any errors.
The new site will be much more user friendly especially with the placement of ads.
The message board will be really great!
Stay tuned,
Sharyn

'bashing' |
| |
|
I think theres a fine line behind bashing and personal experience that holds truth.. For strict example,I bought a horse from a trainer , who im sure you ALL know who the person is if i mentioned her. Well i was lied to and taken for quite a ride. The horse was opposite of what i was sold. You would THINK some one with a huge reputation to uphold would be honest, BUT that dosent always mean they will be .... Just keep that in mind. I don't know the people being spoken about. But, in my experience with many horse professionals and big barns RIGHT HERE on long island , I have some horror storys no one would ever even beleive b/c the place or person is so 'respected' . There is 3 sides to every story .

Trainer |
| |
|
Are you suggesting that I am going to expose my daughter to some sort of corruption or criminal mind no matter who I choose for her as a riding instructor here in Long Island?
If that is the case then my assumption is wrong that horse people in all parts of the world, including Long Island are primarly above the mainstream population when it comes to morals, values and integrity. Where I come from, those who are involved in the horse community tend to be more pure than the average business owner. Yes, riding instructing & horse prospecting is still a business but horse people, I thought, are supposed to be better than cutting corners and breaking laws just to make an extra buck.
I tend to hope that you are incorrect. Horsemanship is about purety and honesty. It begins with being honest to oneself, then honest with one's horse. It then evolves to being honest to others. Only at that most simple level will any horse full trust its rider.
I guess I really am a niave out-of-towner. Okay... I am all ears-
Please continue educate me on what I need to know to protect my daughter.
It is very curious to me that the people who defend this trainer never say that all this is untrue. I have no bad feelings for the person who came on to warn me. I just agree she or he should have left out names. If it is true and it seems that it is, I have a choice on where to go. I feel bad that this board has taken the back of someone who is doing these unjust things and not the person who did the warning. In my opinion, Ana was simply trying to help me out. You are defending the murderer not the murdered JUST AN EXAMPLE.
Can anyone say these things are lies. What you wish to say is that these type of people are who you associate with and are friends of yours. I would be unconfortable to leave my horses at an place that is not above board no pun intended. I also do not wish to have my daugher exposed to this type of lifestyle there are many legal barns I HOPE. How many acres is this farm anyway does anyone know. Please leave names out of any replies if you have something negative to say.

Cavallo Boots |
| |
|
Bree - contact Jeannean Mercuri - she is a barefoot trimmer who sells Cavallo boots as well as others - see her website at gotreeless.com (has her phone number there). She can give you a lot of insight on the different boots. I spoke with Cavallo and they had said they have to basically be an exact fit which makes me think you have to have more than one size as your horse is growing? Not sure - Jeannean is great to speak with.

Smithtown town code |
| |
|
The harboring or stabling of horses or ponies shall be in compliance with the following requirements:
(1)The proposed use shall be on not less than one-half (1/2) acre of land.
(2)There shall not be more than one (1) horse or pony per one-half (1/2) acre of land, except that on a plot of three-fourths (3/4) acre two (2) such animals may be permitted. On a plot of one (1) acre, three (3) such animals may be permitted. Additional horses or ponies may be permitted at the rate of one (1) such animal per additional one-half (1/2) acre. The use shall be accessory to the principal residential use of the property or shall be for the purpose of agricultural use. All activities shall be conducted for the use of the resident. No boarding or rental of horses or ponies shall be permitted whatsoever.
(3)All horses or ponies shall be sheltered in barns, stables or other roofed structures which shall be constructed and maintained in accordance with the Building Code of the Town of Smithtown and pursuant to all applicable provisions of this chapter.
(4)All horses or ponies shall be harbored in a fenced-in area that does not encroach into any required front or side yard. Furthermore, the fence shall be set back at least six (6) feet from any side or rear property line. The fence shall be between four (4) and six (6) feet in height and shall be constructed of suitable material. All enclosures shall provide for a gate with a safety latch or lock.
As you can see, paragraph (2) lays down some very important law. When the town says the use of horses "shall be accessory to the principal residential use of the property" it is saying that since the property itself is only zoned residential, the horses on the property cannot be used for business or commercial use. The moment a riding instructor accepts payment in exchange for providing riding lessons, that person has crossed the legal boundary between "pleasure pursuit" and "business pursuit". This code clearly makes it illegal for horses to be used for business purposes on residentially zoned properties within the town of Smithtown.
I will go one step further and state that this also includes LEASING HORSES as the code does state "no boarding or rental of horses or ponies shall be permitted whatsoever". Leasing by definition is long-term rental and not legal in the town of Smithtown. As you can see, this section also contains the 3 horse per acre law as many are aware. It also cobers the fencing rules (which many of you will be shocked to learn that all paddocks and ridibng rings must be at least 6 feet away from any property line.
If you are asking yourself, "what would make it legal to start my own riding school?" then the answer can be found in Article XII 322-82 Special Exception uses paragraph 8-
front the Smithtown town code
------
From Janine- It is illegal to run a business on any residential property in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. That is what the Suffolk County Equestrian Task Force is trying to address. Most of us could not own horses if the Towns ever enforced these rules. So lets not single out anyone, let sleeping dogs lie, because it affects us all.

Rider available on weekends |

|
Hello,
I am looking for someone who needs help with riding and is located in Suffolk County. I have
school so I can only do the weekends. I have had two working student jobs and I have ridden
primarily H/J since I was five. I would consider myself an experienced 3 ft rider. I outgrew my
horse and sold him but now I am looking for something else to ride. I would consider a situation
where I did barn work in exchange for riding. If you need help or know of someone who might
please let me know!

Task Force |

|
Benemom
The mission is laid out in the draft document.
http://lidcta.com/SC_Equestrian_DRAFT_Report.pdf
Part of the problem is the inconsistent approach taken by each town regarding 'horse' zoning. Also property taxes play a part in this as does the definition of a horse property. So can't give a one line summary.
There has been considerable information posted about this project over the last 6-8 months and many of the meetings were open to the public.

Looking For a Barn |
| |
|
Hello!
I'm looking for a new barn to board two horses at. Barn must have an indoor or a covered ring that can be ridden in all year round if a backyard barn. Turnout is a must. Cleanliness is a must. My one horse is an easy keeper but my other horse is high maintenence (he has allergies, supplements, boots fly mask tail wrap on/off for t/o, special food, hay, and bedding etc) I want my horses to be taken care of not just forgotten! I'd prefer if grass was on the property for grazing. Nice sized riding rings are a must and a happy atmosphere is greatly appreciated!
I would like the barn to be no further then 20 minutes from Oakdale.
Thanks in advance!! - kickapoodrummer@aim.com

More cotton(tales) |

PS. Oftentimes, it may look like a bunny nest is abandoned, but often their mother is out there, never too far away, secretly coming back for regular nursing/nest tending when she is sure you (and any cats) are nowhere around :)

Cottontails |
| |
|
Every year there are many bunny nests on my property. If you come across one, or it is accidentally disturbed by your pet, the best thing to do is to simply leave the bunnies be in their nest. If you remove them, they might appear to be 'in shock' but when introduced back to their nest, they will cuddle in, and know exactly where they are.
Handle them as little as possible (if they get your scent or your cat's scent, their mother might reject them). If their eyes are not yet open, they are not yet weaned and will starve unless nursed regularly by their mother. So, try to put them back ASAP, and try to keep your cat away from the site. Good luck.

Gift Certs wanted! |
| |
|
Project Sage is having a large dinner dance in October with a huge Chinese Auction. We are looking for gift certificates and baskets for this. We are hoping all of the local barns will be willing to donate riding lessons/trails for our fundraiser. We are also hoping if anyone has any connections with restaurants, tack shops, stores, etc. that they could contact and get to donate something to the fundraiser. Another option is making a gift basket yourself to donate. We have had some amazing baskets donated already!
Also looking for any equine Massage Therapists that are interested in donating Gift Certs.
The items DO NOT need to be horse related so if anyone has anything they would like to donate please contact me at projectsagehorserescue@gmail.com
Thank you in advance,

This message is for a gentleman named DAN. I had spoken with you a couple of weeks ago in
reference to your barn in Manorville by the expressway. My phone broke and I lost my contacts and
have had a few various other things that have occupied my time. I was not able to find your barn
from the directions you gave me, otherwise I would have just stopped by and tried to contact you
that way. Please e-mail me and I will give you my cell phone number again. I am still interested in
speaking with you. I am sorry I was not able to get in touch with you sooner and I am sorry if I

Great Job by Copper Horse Hauling ! |
| |
|
Yesterday my horse Dutchess made her first long distance trip upstate , I used Copper Horse hauling and I just wanted to say what a great job Joe did , he arrived on time and got my horse on the trailer even though she was a little hesitate. I met him up at Dutchess's new barn and she was calm and cool right off the trailer. He even held her as I took off her standing wraps.I would without a doubt use him again when Dutchess needs to come back home for the summer . Thanks again Joe , you did a great job and Dutchess thanks you too :-)

Looking for a horse to love? |
| |
|
You may remember my post from July and here I am again. Unfortunately, I have to find a home for
my Appendix gelding, Cider. My husband has been laid off, we have 2 small children at home and I
do not have the money nor the time to spend with Cider-both of which he deserves. He has done
everything-trail, jump and even cow penning last year! Please, post if you are at all interested.
There is a possibility of him staying where he is at a barn with direct access to trails and fields to ride
at a price that CANNOT be beat. I love him to pieces and this is breaking my heart but, I want to find
someone who will love him like I do.

There are 3 horses in terrible conditions in Anson, Maine and we are able to pull them but this has to be done asap. 2nd Annual NYNE Breast Cancer Benefit Ride! |
| |
|
Hello Horse Community!
The NY Natural Equestrians are planning our second annual Breast Cancer Benefit Ride on Sunday, October 17 at Connetquot State Park Preserve.
Last year we had a GREAT turnout and a beautiful day, and thanks to all the generosity of the horse community we raised over $8,500 to benefit Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program. We hope to do as well if not better this year!
If you are a barn, tack shop or feed store owner, PLEASE contact me so that I can send you a flyer to post at your location(s). If you can donate items or a gift certificate for our Chinese Auction we'd really appreciate that.
If anyone is interested in participating in the event, please contact me directly at email: promogal1965@aol.com so that I can fill you in on details and send you a sponsorship sheet.
Thanks all, and ride safe!

Campp/lesson horses |
| |
|
After I bought my pony from a lesson barn I left to go to another barn with a friend who moved for personal reasons. When I left I told my instructor that if they ever retired my favorite horse I would be interested in adopting him and would even pay an adoption fee. She agreed to pass this information to the owner of the barn. Every summer I would stop by to say hello to the people I knew at the barn and to check on my favorite horse reminding them how much he meant to me. Two summers ago I was one week to the day too late. They told me he was sent to a camp for disadvntaged youths Upstate New York (he was cronically lame with navicular disease). However they were not able to give me a name or address of the place thwy sent him despite the fact that I expressed my interest to donate to the program. I have my doubts that this upstate farm even exists and for a year have done reasearch to lacate it as well as tried to contact the the rescue barn that they got him from. No one seems to want to contact me and tell me the truth. It's a shame that these lesson barns don't even want to give these horses a good home even when they are wanted by someone. I am even more disapointed in this rescue that no longer cares about a horse they once adopted out.
