Welcome to LI Equine's Message Board! This is the place to post your ideas, suggestions, stories, etc. All are invited to keep us up to date on what's going on at your barn in the "Barn News" section. The "Bargain Barn" is available for you to list for sale all items under $100 (any item over $100 is considered a classified ad and must be submitted as such!) Please remember that we do not post horses for sale, lease, or share board unless the horses are for free. We also don't post classified ads on the message board. And....please remember - if you don't have anything nice to say - don't say anything at all!
You must login to see email information on this message board.

We survived the early 2 feet of snow,, horses were happy and dry and warm inside with plenty of hay and water and grain, and when turned out they were eager to make those snow angels and run and play in the white cold snow. It is beautiful to see the mountains and trees covered in ice cicles and snow.. The retired horses were eager to see the sunshine and feel the new snow under their hooves. Almost Holiday time. and visits from Santa bringing them holiday cookies.. Be well and enjoy.. jo marie

North Fork Therapeutic Riding Program
Foxrun Farm Cutchogue, NY 11935, Cutchogue, NY
561-358-5539 (not 516) or 631-734-6199
The North Fork Therapeutic Riding Program offers individualized therapeutic riding lessons to Long Island’s North Fork residents of all ages: children, adults and veterans with cognitive, physical, emotional or developmental disabilities.
Working as a team, our special, calm horses and experienced therapeutic riding instructors provide an opportunity to improve lives! This is a year-round program designed to help each individual develop and enhance their skills to full potential, all the while gaining a sense of self-control, personal responsibility and self-confidence.
Please call for an appointment to meet an instructor, come see the horses and get a personal assessment. Our fees are reasonable.
Our program also includes training students to gain confidence by competing in horseshows. Notably, in the 2003 Special World Olympics in Dublin, Ireland where one of our instructor’s autistic student’s won the gold and silver medals in horsemanship!
We also rescue retired racehorses and incorporate them into our program.
To continue providing these services to our community, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Dank have been generously donating their beautiful Foxrun Farm as a home for the horses. However, hay and grain costs, veterinarian and farrier fees, farm/barn maintenance and labor (we do much of our own work) are still very expensive.
Donations from you or your organization would be most appreciated to help us continue helping our community. We are in the process of becoming a 503 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Meanwhile all your contribution will be deductible retroactively.

Foxrun Farm Backstory: How Leonard and Beryl Dank Transformed a Cornfield into a Horse Farm, and Nurture a Therapeutic Riding Nonprofit
Leonard and Beryl Dank share the backstory of Foxrun Farm; Maryann D’Auria, the barn manager, riding instructor and trainer discusses therapeutic riding.
Q: How did you get to the North Fork, to Foxrun farm?
LD: I’m a medical illustrator, lived and worked in Manhattan. To keep our sanity we built a summer house in Cutchogue in 1964. Around 1977 we learned that this big vacant 25 acre farm became available. Since our daughter was riding horses, we wanted to buy this to become a horse farm. We made an offer, but it was refused. Two or three years later the farm was still vacant, we renewed our offer and it was accepted.
Our daughter had been using a rented horse. Her desire to own her own horse is what started it all.
Q: Did you have any agricultural background?
LD: Well, the first thing we did was build a house, and we moved in on Beryl’s birthday, 1981. And no. We learned much of what to do came from books. Beryl started planting herbs almost as soon as we bought the property. She made herb jellies, sold them at a local farm stand. They were a big success, so she kept growing more and more, eventually about an acre of herbs in all. A local trucker started taking her herbs up to markets in Hunt’s Point, NYC, and also up to Boston. The herbs had to be in market very early so we and some local kids who worked for Beryl, would be out there in the pitch dark at 5 am, turn the tractor lights on and gather the herbs.
Soo after the herb planting started, we went to farm auctions; we needed to get equipment. We’re Manhattan people and we’re at farm auctions buying pipes for irrigation! We got a lot of teasing but all the local REAL farmers were very encouraging and helpful. I moved my business here full time in 1983, gave up the city life.
In 1984, we planted our first crop of hay on 13+ acres—and brought in 1200 bales of hay! That’s a lot of hay. So in 1985 we built a barn to hold the hay. Then a horse-fence expert came up from Kentucky to build our fencing and we moved our daughter’s newly bought horse into the barn along with a couple of goats who ate everything in sight, even the cedar siding on the house..
Q: You mentioned you really got the farm because you wanted your daughter to have her own horse. Did you?
LD: Yes. She ought her Thoroughbred horse, Classified Run (Classy) locally. Then Beryl and I went to the 1986 National Clydesdale Sale Show in Springfield Illinois, started bidding and bought Strong Line Rosie May, a Clydesdale weighing about 2000 pounds and standing some 6’ high at the withers. She had been a Budweiser horse. The hardest thing was getting her home here on Long Island.
We decided to breed Rosie to a registered Thoroughbred stallion to give us American Warmblood. Eventually we bought another mare Maple Jean (Daisy) and ended up with 2 mares and 3 Warmbloods and Classy
Q: Warm blood? What’s that about?
MD: Cold blood breeds are Shires, Clydesdales, Belgians—they’re real heavy horses, draft horses. They were meant to be workhorses.
Hot bloods are refined thoroughbreds. Much smaller, maybe 1000-1200 lbs. They have smaller hindquarters, and carry less of a load. They’re great at going forward—racing, steeplechase and fox hunting.
Warm bloods are a cross between the two. They have stronger hindquarters than a thoroughbred, and are stronger. They are bred to take a full grown man—200lbs—for a long time. They’re also better at dressage, and are very popular now in Olympic Show jumping.
Q: What are the horses we see in Westerns? Are those warm bloods?
MD: No, those are usually Quarter Horses, and they are entirely different breed. Traditionally the Quarter Horse is good for Western disciplines, can be faster than a thoroughbred for a quarter mile. That’s what they say. Great for trail riding, pleasure riding, children’s lessons.
Thoroughbreds are usually better racing and English riding disciplines; Warmbloods for dressage (dancing—which is judged on rhythm, balance, consistence, obedience/responsiveness) and show jumping.
Q: Foxrun Farm offers riding lessons; what horses do people get to ride? And what services do you offer?
MD: We board horses in our ten-stall barn and another four in an adjacent annex. Interestingly, horses are generally fine outside throughout the winter—they’re animals, and are comfortable even when it’s 15 degrees out.
We offer riding lessons year-round, English-style primarily, and also therapeutic riding lessons and during the summer we have ‘pony camps’—that’s what they’re called here, but we use horses, not ponies.
We also have an elaborate system of trails. If a group wants to use them, just call and make arrangements. You have to bring your own horse. As a boarder, you can also make use of our exercise ring and jumps.
Horses are available for lease to experienced adult English-style riders.
The rest is by appointment. You can’t just show up and take a horse for a ride.
I rescue thoroughbreds after they’re done racing; I have three here. If I can get them to be quiet enough, I use them in these programs. With all these ex- racehorses it’s really become an economic problem. When you don’t own a farm, it’s really expensive to keep these horses.
Q: Maryann, how long have you been riding?
A: I started in a Girl Scout program when I was in 3rd grade. I got my first horse when I was 13. I was showing, competing, training to be an instructor and got involved in the therapeutic riding. I have been riding for 33 years and teaching for 25 years.
I was the director of the Red Barn Therapeutic Riding in Old Brookville and became a Team USA Special Olympics coach. After working in Brookville for about 10 years, my husband and I moved to Florida where my mom had a mini-farm. I was a show trainer in hunters, jumpers and combined training in south Florida.
Q: How did you get from Florida to the North Fork?
MD: My husband’s family had a summer home in Southold, and we decided to move back north. He introduced me to Southold and I found a 10 acre horse farm where I could work, live and bring my horses.
I met the Danks and Foxrun Farm because I need a place to stable my three horses after that barn was sold.
Q: What’s therapeutic riding?
A; People with special needs disabilities of all kinds, including PTSD, can benefit from horseback riding. Riding helps develop and enhance basic motor skills, muscle coordination and even communication skills, while gaining a sense of self-control, personal responsibility and self-confidence.
Learning to ride and control an animal as large as a horse requires a lot of physical skills that can be learned and the relationship with the animal offers a powerful emotional bond.
People who cannot play sports or succeed in many other rigorous activities can, through therapeutic riding, master riding a horse and gain tremendous muscular skills as well as self-confidence.
Q: How did the current incarnation of Foxrun Farms horse farm come to be?
LD: One day Maryanne mentioned therapeutic riding and that one of her students, a youngster with Asperger’s, a form of autism, had eventually became a gold and silver medalist in the 2003 World Special Olympics. I became interested. She told me about how helpful it was for physically, emotionally, and developmentally disabled people—for people with PTSD too. There’s something about the rhythm of the horse that helps with posture.
So we decided to create the North Fork Therapeutic Riding Program using the facilities of Foxrun Farm; we started up about a year ago. We have applied to Southold Town to sponsor an eight week program this coming spring.
MD: For the past year, the Danks have been very generously donating out their farm for the Therapeutic Program and the camps. Without their generosity these programs would not possible.
LD: We’re really enjoying giving back to the community

Happy Summer
Can you picture your horse here? Spacious grassy fields, with deep blue sky above sharing a few poofy clouds. Mountains in the distance beyond the treelines turning a light shade of purple. A group of horses with their heads down munching on green grass with their ears relaxed to the sides as their eyes are soft with contenment as their shining coats grab the last rays of the setting sun. That is what i have the pleasure of viewing every day here at Three Bays Farm, for the last 15 years.
Now is the time to start thinking of when you will be retiring your special guy or gal. Early fall is the best time before going into the winter months. With summer just around the corner and spring finally here, its the best time for you to enjoy trail rides and quality time before making that oh so very hard decision. This is a great option for riders on a tight budget looking to advance their horsemanship and gain hands on experience at the farm. Ages 15 & up, availability for mornings from 8am - 12:30 or afternoons 2:00 - 6:30pm duties include feeding/watering & general farm clean up. Must be able to commit to one shift per week to participate, year round program.
Experience is preferred but not necessary, this is a working student position (for lessons) or may consider a reduced board option if you own a horse.
For more information please contact the farm through our website at www.EasternEquineExchange.com or (631)357-1895

Please consider making a small donation to a barn who helps child and adults with disabilites enjoy horses just as you and I do!!!
Hi everyone! I am a student at Suffolk county community college and a recipient of the Get There From Here Scholarship, which is a full scholarship at Suffolk! For my scholarship I am required to complete 10 hrs of community service and I have chosen to work with pal-O-mine equine assisted riding faculty for the disabled! I am asking the Long Island horse community for donations for pal-o-mine! Some of the things they need are as follows, but if anyone has anything else to donate That is great as well! I am located in bohemia and willing to pick up any of the donated items or anyone is welcomed to drop them off to me! Please help pal-I-mine out as well as myself to complete my hours needed for my full scholarship! Thanks in advance!

THIS SUNDAY!
First Reining Show of the season for ECRA at the beautiful Hillcrest Stables in Riverhead NY. In addition to the show there will be several vendors (East End Shop Girl, Sunny Bows, and Lost Cowboys!), a massive Chinese auction (see our facebook page for a list of some of the amazing items that have been donated) a 50/50, a live performance of our national anthem in the morning, and a birthday cake to celebrate ECRA’s 40th Birthday this year!
This is going to be a fantastic kick off not only to our ECRA shows, but really to the entire Long Island show season. Come one, come all and join the fun! Bring some friends!
We are also looking for some volunteers for the day of the show. In particular, we are in need of one or a few scribes to work with our judge. A scribe writes down the scores for the judge so they do not need to look away from the rider in the ring. It’s a great way to learn about reining and how the maneuvers are scored. You can just commit to it for a few classes it you like, and lunch is included for anyone who is used as a volunteer the day of the show. Other volunteer opportunities available! Email us at eastcoastreinersassociation@gmail.com if you are interested!
Show starts at 9:00am @ Hillcrest Stables, 1219 Middle Road, Riverhead, NY 11901.
Thank you to all who have donated to the auction, volunteered their time and efforts, sponsored our classes or donated to ECRA in some other way. We absolutely could not do this without all of you! Also a big thanks to Hillcrest Stables for always being supportive of our little club!
See you all on Sunday! (You would be crazy to pass this one up).

Hey all, be sure to check out the ECRA Spring Slide in the events section. The show will be on Sunday, April 19th at Hillcrest Stables in Riverhead NY. In addition to the horse show we will be having a really nice Chinese auction (you do not want to miss this one!) and a little cake for the club which is celebrating its 40th birthday this year! Hope to see you all there!

Thank you all for your kind words and interest in helping out regarding arrangements for Gaelle Spence. Being that Gaelle did not have any remaining family members it has been very difficult to appropriately plan a service for her, but we have finally discussed and settled upon what will be done. A memorial service will be held for all friends to attend sometime in late January/early February- more details will follow.
For those that have asked how they can help- we will be starting a collection to cover the expense of the memorial service and the cost of Gaelle’s beloved Flirt until a new home is secured for her. Any leftover funds will be donated in her memory to the ASPCA.
If you wish to donate, please visit the following website where contributions can be made via PayPal:

This message is for anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Gaelle Spence who was an active member of the Long Island Dressage community. Gaelle passed away last night, December 23rd, 2013, and is lived on through her chestnut mare Grand Flirt who currently resides at the Thomas School of Horsemanship in Melville, NY.
Gaelle had a bright smile and unmistakable laughter, and she promoted the utmost respect for the equestrian sport. She always stressed the importance of horsemanship and knowledge. She will be sorely, sorely missed by many.
Arrangements are currently being planned, more information to come. If you knew Gaelle and would like updates when her services are confirmed- please feel free to contact Mallory Robalino at mtrobalino@quinnipiac.edu.
Thank you.

We at TBF are enjoying a beautifully mild Autumn. The leaves are just starting to turn on the maples. Bright oranges and reds line the track along with the dark purple leaves of the plum trees near the barn. Our two newest members Shadow( who is retired from Penn State Equestrian program) and Nicos( former show jumper of Ian Millar) have settled in nicely and relaxed and happy!!! All the retirees are getting nice and fuzzy in preparation of the next season. Hello from TBF to all our Long Island friends.
Here in PA we are enjoying the warm autumn days will the awesome fall colors. We have 2 new retirees to join our family, Shadow a 30 y/o Appaloosa, who spent the last 14 years keeping the Penn State Equestrian team in the ribbons!! He is now spending his retirement here at Three Bays. We are also excited to have Nicos, a Belgium Warmblood, formerly shown by Ian Millar. You may have seen Nicos soaring over the courses at the Hampton classic(just one of the prestigious shows he attended) a few years ago. He will now enjoy grassy fields with the company of others.
Three Bays Farm has been here in PA for 12 years since our move from Long Island. We miss our family and friends, and my students are all growing up either in college or professionals in their careers. Where has the time gone?!!!!

I too was ripped off. . The SOB told me he was taking my beloved mare to a NJ group crematory, about 3 yrs ago now . . . come to find out he took her to the brookhaven landfill. . . i've never been so disgusted and heartbroken . . I lost that mares best friend just yesterday and had her buried for $650 by my hay guys partner. The hardest choices in life. Some circumstances you have no choice but to take them to the landfill but it just all around sucks =( .

I'm looking for barn work in exchange for a stall. I lost my horse to melanomas in 09 and moved to long island and board is much higher then I'm used to paying.. I'm a college student and mother of 2 under the age of 2 and miss being a horse owner desperatly. Doesn't have to be anything fancy just looking to see if there is anything out there before I start my search for a horse. Any backyard barn in the East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Amagansett area would be best. I have several years experience in various assects of the horse industry from barn managment, grooming, daily care and some lessons although i'd rather not teach until I get back in riding shape. Any hints would be great, not looking to get a horse until next spring so I have pleanty of time.

There is a investigation going on.. Not enough people stepping forward with all the evidence. A LOT of people have pulled their horses out of there deathly skinny. He's not a good person. These horses shouldn't have had to die. The one rotted in her stall for weeks before he caught wind people were talking about it and he burried her hours before spca happened to arrive.

Hello, I am possibly getting a horse and I am looking for a barn where I can work to lower the price of board. I was thinking of a place (preferably with an in and out and access to a ring) that in exchange for work around the barn and with the other horses it could lower my board due to me being college student.
