Apartment Needed

Hi my boyfriend and I are two hard working adults in need of an apt for rent. We are quiet with no pets and just need a place to call our own. we both have lots of horse experience and would be willing to work off some if not all of the rent if that were an option. We do not have a huge budget to work with. If there was a barn stall available too that woul be great but not nesessary. We can both give you employment references and history as well as personal references. we are looking for something in a rather timely fashion as our current situation forces us to leave soon For reasons not our own. Please show me what you have and email or call. Prbauerphoto@verizon.net or 516-317-0183

Donations of horse stuff to young girl in hospital

This is not a Long Island story but I know there are a lot of horse people on here and maybe someone would be able to help this girl. I moved to Tennessee a few year ago (from LI) I recently sold a horse to a wonderful , animal loving family. The horse was for their sweet, shy 14 year old daughter. She didn't mind that the horse needed work and she didn't even mind that she could not ride the horse because what she wanted was a friend. She boards the horse with me and at first she came daily to groom, give treats and hand walk the horse. I started giving her natural horsemanship lessons on the ground and she was a natural and a real horse lover.  One day she stopped coming. I got a call from her parents that said she was admitted to the hospital. It turns out that she was having heart problems and the doctors did not think it was safe for her to leave.  After several more weeks of testing they were told that she could not leave the hospital until she had a heart transplant. The family stayed at the hospital for several months waiting... and waiting.  Finally two days ago her new heart was donated and the 14 year old girl went through a successful heart transplant surgery. She is still sedated and will not be out of the woods for a long time. She will need to continue her bed rest for a long time. I am trying to get together anything that might make her happy. It's tough because you guys are in NY but if anyone has any horse stuff/girl stuff, horse DVDs that they would like to donate or has a connection of someone that might donate DVDs that would be best since she has been on bed rest for so long. If anyone else can think of anything else that they would like to donate to her... Maybe some type of arts and crafts sign with her name in it, a horse picture frame, etc... anything to make her smile. I know it's hard to send things because of the shipping costs but if anyone is interested in helping please email me at FLequestrian@aol.com for more info. Please send positive thoughts or prayers for this girl and her family.

College student looking for working position

Hello there!

I'm currently going to school at Stony Brook and was looking for a horse to ride a few times a week. I'm on the taller side (6'4") and it would be preferable to find a horse on the bigger side. Looking to ride in exchange for doing some work on mostly Fridays and Saturdays. I can w/t and eventually canter as I have not been the saddle consistently enough within the past year. Hoping to find someone flexible with a great horse! I also have m,y car on campus so traveling isnt an issue.

Please email, text or call

Looking for a Place to Ride

Good afternoon everyone,

I am a new member to this forum but I have been using this site for quite a while now. Just never got around to making an account.

Last month my mother, sister and I agreed to lease a horse in her name for us to share and so far we havent had much success in finding one.

A few years ago my sister and I started doing volunteer work with horses at several farms, however we were declined from almost all of them. This past year we found a great farm only to be thrown under the bus again. We've said that maybe the best thing would be to lease a horse because all we wanted was to have the freedom to ride, thats what we dreamed of.

We are beginners,we've had 4 lessons each and are at the same point. We have almost about a years worth of volunteer experience.

If anyone has any sort of advice on how we can get back into riding it would be appreciated.

Thank you,

B

Re: Trailer Parking

From Islip Town Code (Available on the Town of Islip website):

§ TC3-3.1Personal trailer restrictions.

[Added 5-24-2011]
A.
Daytime parking of personal trailers. A personal trailer shall not be parked along a public road within the Town of Islip in such a manner so as to constitute a traffic hazard. An unattached, unladen personal trailer parked along a public road must be supplemented with traffic cones or some other visual safety devices when parked so to give notice to the public of the obstruction. A personal trailer may not be parked in a location whereby it adversely affects another's use of his or her driveway. A personal trailer's location along a public road must allow for an adequate turning radius for proper ingress/egress to and from adjacently situated driveways along the road. A personal trailer in the public right-of-way qualifies as an obstruction to motorist's sight, as defined in § 68-404 of the Islip Town Code, and is subject to the sight triangle requirements of § 68-405 of the Islip Town Code, as well as all applicable provisions of the Islip Town Code and New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.

B.
Overnight parking of personal trailers. All personal trailers are prohibited from being parked on a public road within the Town of Islip between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Horse Board

Hi everyone.. this is probably a really big long shot but there's this horse that I started working with in the winter. Because of the weather we had to put his work on pause, and then I ended up moving from the barn that I was at that he was also at so I stopped.  It's now almost into next winter and I got a text telling me that the owner of this horse is getting rid of him and has been asking a bunch of rescues if they will take him but no one is saying yes.  He has until the end of october to be moved and I don't know where he's going to be going. I really want to take him but I can't afford board for a whole other horse as for that I have my own and he is currently on stall rest for about minimum of 6 months. He is so sweet and I love him a lot! He's got a cute personality and loves people. He hasn't been ridden in years because the owner never came down to ride him after she had been thrown. I want to try to find a place that will allow me to keep him there in exchange for work. I go to school in the mornings but if I had to I would wake up to feed and I could feed nights and I could clean and even supply grain. I want to try to find something that we could work out somehow. I am located on Long Island. My horse is in Central Islip but I am currently living in Bellport so if I could find somewhere close to bellport (manorville, wading river, rocky point, bellport, medford, etc) that would be awesome! Like I said this is a real long shot but I figured I would write a post asking around. I'm responsible and I don't bring drama where I go. I just really want this horse to be safe and I know I can give him my all. Please e-mail me if anyone knows anything I can do or anywhere I can go.

Contact NYS Parks ASAP

Hi all I hope you are all well At our board meeting the Friends of Connetquot was discussing the severe understaffing of Connetquot. The trails are suffering because of this situation. Trail maintenance and mowing has been severely curtailed. This adds to the tick problem. I am asking you all to contact the Governor's office and the NYS Parks commissioner Rose Harvey as well as LI regional commissioner Brian Foley to ask that this situation is remedied ASAP If you as an organization write as well as your members contact the offices, hopefully they will respond. Also only 350 equestrian permits have been sold in Connetquot and I know the number of users must be double that at least. Please purchase permits as needed. Thanks Jerry
Please forward this to all your members thanks

Rescued Horse to Share

Morgan mare, age 10, 15 hands, named Stormy.  She is sweet and gentle.  My daughter is busy with school and this horse needs a healthy routine.  ($250/month, 6 month commitment)

I have a small riding ring and ride on the street in a quite part of Huntington.

Great with kids.  Riding is at your own risk.

3 young male ducks for adoption

I have 3 young male ducks for adoption. They all live together and get along. One is a Peking, (white) one is a Welsh Harlequin and one is an Indian Runner.  They are healthy and have a great appetite. They come with duck food, a plastic small pool and a duck house. The duck house would need to have the windows covered as it's a "summer" house. Please email ridefrthesol@gmail or call 631 366 4929. Thanks, Denise Smile

College student looking for horse to ride

Hello there!

I'm currently going to school at Stony Brook and was looking for a horse to ride a few times a week. I'm on the taller side (6'4") and it would be preferable to find a horse on the bigger side. Looking to ride in exchange for doing some work on mostly Fridays and Saturdays. I can w/t and eventually canter as I have not been the saddle consistently enough within the past year. Hoping to find someone flexible with a great horse!

ISO Horse for weekend rides

I am a highly accomplished dressage rider (shown through Prix St. George) who rode the hunters, jumpers, and eq in my junior years.  I'm 5'5" and 110lbs but am most comfortable on large horses.  My horse is recovering from an injury and I am looking for a horse to ride Saturdays and Sundays only.  I am not interested in paying to school your young horses or riding a dangerous "project" horse.  I'm happy to teach a nice horse dressage basics (as George Morris says, dressage is the basis) to improve it's jumping/equitation or help school safe sane babies.  I'm located in NYC, so the closer to it and public transportation the better.

Ticks

The ticks are horrible everywhere.  It's not isolated to the park, so I'm sure your request for Tick spraying by the county commissioner wouldn't be well received.  If they could do it, I'm sure they would, but; what about the rest of the Island, such as Connetquot park, (which I think you were referring) the old southhaven, manorville hills and the surrounding trails.

There is no way one can take any animal in the woods at this time of year without taking proper precautions and becoming your own best advocate for tick removal and or prevention by buying and faithfully using the product "Freedom 45, " and a good fly spray.

If you fail to do this, you will have to remove hundreds of ticks from your horse.

I've never heard of counties spraying for ticks.  Mosquitos, yes. Ticks no.

Be your own advocate and take proper measures when trail riding in our sparse woods.

Re: trail riding at Southaven park

Linda you need to use the Gerrard Rd entrence ( west side ) of Southaven park to park your trailer. It's the old Longisland equestrian center and longisland steamer entrance. There is a fenced area by the old stable to park your trailer. I would check at the rangers station to find out when that gate is open. I know off season it's open Tue and Thu around 8am-5pm. The trails are not marked as bridle paths but just make sure your not riding in the picnic areas or parking lots also the eastern side of the park is off limits but all those trail heads are clearly marked. All unmarked trails are fair game. As far as a permit I'm sure technically you need one try calling any Suffolk county park and I'm sure they can direct your call. Or go to the rangers station at the park. I've been riding there on and off for 30 years and have never had a problem. Good luck

Ticks in Connetquot Park

I think somoene should post the name of the park keeper in Connetquot Park. I have never seen so many ticks in my life. They need to spray that park!!!

Can somoene post the name of who to call and complain. They do not spray there and it is HORRIBLE.

We need to all call and make a fuss so they spray that park and get the tick issue taken care of.

Please post who the guy is who takes care of the park

william - wormer

Rotational worming is an outdated concept. Most of the vets on Long Island recommend doing fecals now, not rotational worming due to the reason you stated.  My vet recommends a targeted wormer in spring and fall, regardless of fecal results.  I do fecals as part of the spring and fall shots.  If your horse is a high shedder, they may need wormer more frequently, but with the fecal, your vet can determine which wormer should be used instead of just a random one.  I find that having just a fecal done by your veterinarian is not that expensive, and cheaper than worming every two months.

response to georgia

i'm trying to understand why georgia is so angry at the young women who placed a work/ride ad.  i read the ad and it offered their services for barn work, riding/exercising horses, or barn work in exchange for riding. it makes perfect sense to me that they included their riding experience since they were looking to ride. if you aren't interested in hiring them, georgia, don't. no need to bad mouth them.  and good luck finding and keeping a barn worker. you must be a miserable person to work for.

  Wed Jul 02

To Georgia

Since Georgia seems to be referring to an ad I had posted about me and my cousin looking for work:

the reason we included our riding experience in the work ad is because we had first talked to a few people that were looking for a work-to ride agreement or they were looking for someone to come exercise their horse that they did not have time for. We are however also looking for anyone who needs someone to do their barn chores so as you said they themselves have time to ride. Since we are willing to do both types of work we felt it was important to include our experience with both riding and working. Sorry to offend you. If you do need someone to help you with your barn so you have more time to ride we both speak English and are over 18 :) thank you

About barn work

This is a question ... why in almost every message where people are supposed to be looking for barn work does

80% of their post focus on their riding ability? (really their own impressions of what they might be able to do)

If I am looking for barn help, it is for barn help. The last couple of posts from evidently two young people trying to bluff their barn and horse experience  really hit me. If I have someone working on my property they will be no younger than 18. This has to do with liability.

They should have a good working knowledge of the English language in the event I have to leave detailed instuctions.

I don't care how you ride. If I am looking for barn help it is so I HAVE THE TIME TO RIDE. To many of us horses are an investment not a toy. I will pay you what you are worth or the legal wage.

Looking for Noble Assent

I am looking for a horse named Noble Assent. He gave  us so much in the short 14 years that he owned us. He is a 16.3 Liver Chestnut TB. He was adopted, or so I have been told, by a little girl. She showed on him and yes.... came home with a Blue over fences. Smile

Noble is NOT old. !!!!  He has ring bone, but when he is shod at 51 degrees it does not bother him. I have x rays for the current owner, along with a written report on the " ring bone". The bones will NOT fuse and he NEVER had a lame day in the 14 years that he owned us. He also has a wart on his left hind 1/4. Nothing to worry about with that. Had it checked and have the report from Cornell University.

He needs to eat ALOT.... He is not your usual 2 flakes in the am 1 for lunch and 3 for dinner along with a scoop of pellets. He was on sweet feed and it did not make him hot AT ALL. He needed at leased 400 pounds, put on, when I saw him. THIS IS NO ONES FAULT.. He is the worst hard keeper.
The last time I saw him he needed to be floated. I had him floated twice a year by Dr. Karcher. He won't toss his head and goes just fine in a D ring as long as he is floated. No need to give him a harsh bit. He won't respond. This is a debatable issue, but I know him.... If I could take him out on trail, bareback, and then have him realize he was in the woods and he was like ... get me out of here!!!!!!... he never took off and fought with all his might not to bolt. I prepared to die, but he took VERY good care of me. All I had him in was a D ring. He raced so he could have blown right through that bit. But he took care of me. Please post on how he is doing. I am battling cancer so I would like to know that he is ok. I have not been deemed cancer free yet, but we look forward to hearing that news in January.  My worst fear is dying not knowing that he is ok. Thank you... and please know that I have his entire file for all of his health reports. He is very non agressive, in a large herd, so he will not eat. I had him out on 15 acres and that did him in. The person from the backyard barn took him and took awsome care of him. She put weight on him and I know that she loves him too.

Once again I only want to know how he is doing. I am trying to get his tack from his old backyard barn. If I am able to get it, I would love for you to have it. His show tack, wraps, blankets, bits, all with his colors -navy blue and grey. I also have a cooler and due to his VERY HIGH withers I have a special pad that goes under his show pad. Also a size 54 girth. I don't know if that will fit him now.

Please let me know how he is. I will never stop loving him. Every night he is in my prayers and dreams. He is a remarkable horse, as was my Sprinkles Cry.

Thanks !!!!!Smile

Barn cat for Adoption

Hey everyone! I have a gorgeous Tuxedo cat available for adoption. He is a wonderful boy and just doesn't do well in a home setting, we are thinking and active outdoor lifestyle would be great for him!

He loves to cuddle, but when he's had enough he lets you know without warning! He is friendly but he acts like a prince!

Barn check (instead of home check) required and an application must be filled out prior to adoption. He needs the best home possible!

Poor guy has been through 4 different homes before winding back up in ours. and now we can begin to figure out why. He would do great catching pests outside, or simply being a handsome fellow to be aorund!

Please email me at kickapoodrummer@aim.com for pictures and with any questions if interested!

Hi Please contact the Spinning Study Group.  They meet once a month in Suffolk County, in Port Jefferson I believe.  They will be able to help you.    There is a store in Suffolk county that teaaches spinning and that sells flees.  The Hallockville Farm also has a fleece and crafts fair yearly.  You can contact them.   Using a drop spindle is easy, portable and fun.  If a wheel is too expensive, try a drop spindle.   Alpace is great, but dog hair is the best!!!!  Husky, samoyed, collie are fabulous.  I spin and you can contact me if you need help.  Regards  PJ

Looking for a Spinning Wheel

Hello all! I was just wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to use/rent/buy(only if relatively inexpensive) a spinning wheel that can be used to spin alpaca wool. I looked into buying one online but it looks like they're very expensive. Also, does anyone have experience doing so? This would be a first time project, not looking to use one for an extended period of time but wanted a fun new summer project. Additionally, if noone has any info on this, if they could put me in contact with someone who does that would be great. Feel free to post on message board or email me at bcolliecrazy@gmail.com. IHA - June 17th, 2014 Meeting at 7pm

IMPORTANT NOTICE: IHA - June 17th, 2014 Meeting at 7pm - Guest Speaker: Vic Sackett of ACC Systems will introduce us to Radio-frequency identification (RFID)

To be held at:

The Bohemia Recreation Center

1 Ruzicka Way

Bohemia, NY 11716

Vic Sackett of ACC Systems (vsackett@accsystemsinc.com - 631-750-9238) will be introducing us to RFID, which are micro computer chips that can be placed on horses (invisible to the eye, and the size of a piece of rice) and that can hold data such as lineage and medical data and be a GPS locator.

Please invite your vets.  It will be great to get vets involved too, for easier medical tracking of your beloved horse.

Mr. Sackett will have samples to display and purchase if you desire.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the wireless non-contact use of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data, for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically

stored information.

Basic RFID system consist of three components:

1. An antenna or coil usually made of copper or aluminum

2. A Reader also called a ransceiver (with decoder)

3. A transponder (commonly called an RF tag) that is electronically programmed with unique information.

The antenna powered by the reader, emits radio signals to activate the tag and reads and writes data to it. Antennas are the conduits between the tag and the reader which controls the system’s data acquisition and communication.

The reader can be configured either as a handheld or a fixed-mount device. The reader emits radio waves in ranges of anywhere from one inch to 100 feet or more, depending upon its power output and the radio frequency used.

When an RFID tag passes through the electromagnetic zone of the antenna, it detects the reader’s activation signal. The reader decodes the data encoded in the tag’s integrated circuit (silicon chip) and the data is passed to the host computer for processing.

RFID tags come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Animal tracking tags, inserted beneath the skin, can be as small as a pencil lead in diameter and one-half inch in length. These glass tags are used mainly in horses and pet animals. The glass tags do not break because they are surrounded by the animals muscle/flesh. Farm and ranch animals are usually tagged in the ear like a large plastic ear ring.

TheU.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved an implantable passive RFID chip for use in tracking horses and ponies for the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). The NAIS is a federal voluntary information system operated

by the USDA to help track animals in the event of a disease outbreak.  Each chip is a passive 134.2 kHz RFID tag encased in glass. The size of a rice kernel, the tag is implanted just under the skin in a horse's neck.

Each chip is encoded with a 15-digit unique identification number associated with data about the horse, such as the identity and location of its owner. This information is stored in the NAIS database An RFID reader captures the unique ID number on the chip at the time of the reading.
