Message Board

Welcome to LI Equine's Message Board! This is the place to post your ideas, suggestions, stories, etc. All are invited to keep us up to date on what's going on at your barn in the "Barn News" section. The "Bargain Barn" is available for you to list for sale all items under $100 (any item over $100 is considered a classified ad and must be submitted as such!) Please remember that we do not post horses for sale, lease, or share board unless the horses are for free. We also don't post classified ads on the message board. And....please remember - if you don't have anything nice to say - don't say anything at all!

Beginner dressage student looking for position

Hello all!

I am in search of a trainer/barn where I can learn some dressage in exchange for working/ excercising. I can w/t no problem but its been a few years since I've been in the saddle (taken lessons occassionally) so just looking for a stable riding position. Not opposed to learning h/j but I am very tall (6'4") and in my experience dressage horses have been far more plentiful for me to ride. I am located in Riverhead but am willing to travel as I commute to Stony Brook frequently.

You can email me or call me at the addresses listed below

APARTMENT/STALL IN NEED OF SOME HELP!

I am asking for some help from our horse community.  My boyfriend and I are living in bad and unhealthy situation.  I'd prefer not to go into detail on here but we are in need of a place to live and board my horse.  Our money is very limited as we are trying to save to buy a house, but current circumstances dictate that we need to move asap!  The situation where we are now is bad.  There has been theft, and I am concerned about my horse's care.  The situation goes far past that but I am not looking to publicize our situation or bad mouth anyone on a public forum.  If you contact me I will explain it all.  I was  hoping that someone has an apartment with a stall that would let us stay in exchange for paying utilities and working off our board.  In addition my boyfriend is expremely handy and can do construction work and yard work if needed.  We are hard working dedicated adults with full time career jobs.  Not a day goes by that I am not in tears over how we have to live and we just can't afford an apartment and board.  My horse and my boyfriend are my life and I want a better life for us.  We just need to be someplace safe where we can get on our feet and start our lives together.  My horse is the easiest keeper around and gets along with everyone and everything.  If anyone knows of someone who can help us please contact me! Thank you so much.

Bow Hunt in Connetquot

Hello this is very important issue and please we need to show a very strong united presence at the meeting on August 3rd Any questions please contact me at 917 355 5225 or shadbelly4@aol.com Thanks Jerry

What are they thinking?

Word has gotten out that the NYS DEC has approved an open bow hunt for deer in Connetquot River State Park Preserve. This has also been approved by NYS Parks Dept. It is supposed to be in daylight hours starting in November of 2015. This is a very poor decision on many levels. 300,000 people visit the preserve annually, hikers, fishermen, bird watchers, runners and equestrians get permits to ride and visit the beautiful historical trails there. The preserve is surrounded by residential homes right up to the perimeter fences. Many of these homes have horses, dogs and children in their yards. Deer are edge animals which means they congregate near roads, meadow edges, fences and trails. There is no way that the 3,500 acres and adjacent Bayard Cutting property and Suffolk County’s Bohemia Equestrian Center can be secured during a hunt. This is a dangerous and foolhardy experiment. People and horses would be put at risk.

Please rally your friends and neighbors and contact the NYS Parks officials and ask them to intercede and stop this before it starts. There will be a Parks Committee meeting August 3, 11:30 AM at Hempstead State Park where you can speak or you can contact Brian Foley ( brian.foley@parks.ny.gov), Wayne Horsley (wayne.horsley@parks.ny.gov) or George Gorman (george.gorman@parks.ny.gov) at NYS Parks headquarters,

                                            CLINIC DETAILS
Week long workshops and riding adventures are designed for those wanting to improve their confidence, communication, partnership and safe riding skills with horses. Professionals as well as pleasure riders benefit greatly from this week of intense study and fun. As the week progresses each day builds on the previous. Each day takes on its own personality as side trips riding into the rolling mountains and numerous multi colored canyon, discovering and learning about the fern and fauna, dress and play in period clothing and get pictures (extra), swimming, shooting authentic 1800’s era guns and adult camaraderie develop. Campfires,  dinners under the stars, music, story telling, dancing by the piano, trying your hand in western poker like Wyatt Earp and recapping the days events with new friends at happy hour, is enjoyed by all. Viewed as an adult camp with a theme, this format has the highest retention by the students. Working with a large variety of horses with varying personalities and issues, is an invaluable opportunity and critical to the learning process. There is no substitute for handling dozens of horses this week.

IHA Arena Challenge

Our first Arena Challenge is set for this Saturday the 27th at 9am.

The Arena Challenge is a trail course with about 12 obstacles set up in a pattern you have to follow.  Each obstacle is scored and has a time limit to complete.  The entire course is also timed and is part of the final score.  These obstacles are designed to challenge both horse and rider to be able to get through them with ease.  Some obstacles from past challenges have been water obstacles, pool noodles, crinkle boxes mounting and dismounting and bridges.  The course is a surprise and is not unveiled until the morning of the event.  You can get there at 9 to be there for the walk through with the judge.  This way you will know exactly how to do the course.

Anyone can enter, English or Western saddles welcome. There are no rules for horse attire.  All bits and saddles are welcome.  Helmets are strongly suggested.

To enter please call Laura at 631-924-5056 or email draftcrazyny@optonline.net  The cost is $20 per horse and rider.  A horse can only do the course once, but a rider may enter more than once on a different horse.

Even if you are not riding, come one out and watch the fun!

Retirement Heaven

Hi Jill

I saw your message and want to tell you about the most wonderful place on earth for your horse. My horse is not retired, but there are many retirees at the farm.It is: Three Bays Farm  in Reading Pa.The owners,Janet and Neil Citron are consummate horse people. They know each horse well, the individual needs of the horses are met daily. They have beautiful grass fields with large run ins for the field boarded horses, and lovely stalls in the barn.My horse has been there for three years due to poor care here on LI and family emergencies  for me. I jiust came back Sunday from seeing my horse, and he is happier and more content than at any time  he was here. Two of my friends just retired horses there last week, and they are beautifully acclimated and happy. Happy is the operative word for TBF.The horses are happy, the boarders are happy,it is a place of no drama and no tension. The best thing I ever did FOR my horse.I hope you see this and look into it. ISO: New Barn

Hi Everyone:

I'm in search of a new barn to move to. I need two stalls for two lovely OTTB's. I currently am in a rough board situation and pay $435 a month for the two of them. I would like to stick around that price if staying with rough board. I live in East Northport so I would need something as close to there as possible. I do need a barn with a decent size ring and jumps (I have a few standards and poles myself), as well as all day turn out preferred. Please let me know if you have anything I would be interested in. My email is Daisy2010@verizon.net. Thanks!

Riding Permits

This is for Jan in reference to purchasing a riding permit. Do you live in Suffolk County? Don't know what kind of riding permit you want to purchase, but a green key is  $24.00 and our permits for a family of 3 is $55.00. I live in Smithtown and ride in Blydenburgh Park...it's a Suffolk County riding permit. Maybe there's another one I'm not aware of, but I don't think the riding  permit is $65.00. You can Call Suffolk County Parks and they can give you the info. I've been buying family permits for 23 years now. The permit did go up $5.00, but that was long ago. The Green Key fluctuates...usually between $21.00 and $24.00..depeding on how much the County is allotted for funds. When we buy a pass, we show strength in numbers to keep our trails open...I do what I need to do cos I LOVE TO RIDE!! Laughing

P/T Barn Work

Hi, I'm a Long Island girl living in Brooklyn. I'm looking to get back on the Island a couple of days a week to spend some time with my horses who are in Manorville, but need to work while I'm here- I am available all day Monday and Tuesday mornings only, so a back yard barn owner or rough boarder looking for a day or two off would work best. Can muck, feed, water, pick paddocks- whatever is needed. I only would like a little bit of cash to cover my train fair to get out here, (30-40 total) and to get as much horsey time in as possible : )Preferably in Manorville or Riverhead. If this arrangement sounds good to anyone, I can be reached at elenaburnham@live.com and 631-882-7656 and can certainly provide references- I worked at a stable for several years and am well-versed in rough boarding my own horses back in the day. Thanks! -Ellie

Wanted: Field/In and Out Board for Mare and Foal

I'm a professional in the horse industry, working at a busy training and lesson barn.  My mare has just foaled at a repro barn, but it is quite far from my home base near NYC.  I intend to move my horses back to my home barn once the baby is weaned, but I am looking for pasture board with a run-in in the interim.  It would be great to find a facility that has other mares and youngstock, to help socialize my 2.  Turn out is my top priority, but I'd also want a manager on-site (so much can go wrong with foals!).  In an ideal world, there would additionally be riding spaces and a round pen - a great asset for starting the young one!  As a rider/instructor/trainer, I'd also be happy with a work barter for discounted board (specifically I have a strong background in balanced/centered, classical dressage and hunters).  I live on the edge of Queens, and work north of the city, so I'd be interested in facilities located in the lower part of westchester, close-by parts of Jersey, or the lower part of LI.  Please let me know if you have any recommendations!  The move-in date will likely be around June 15/July 1.  Thanks!

IHA Show dates

We are gearing up for the 2015 show season.  We have been working with the County and will have sand added to the two small rings in the near future before the shows start.  We have contracted with Phillip Zachman to use a rock hound on the two small rings and he will be screening the sand currently in the big ring.  Once the work is complete we expect to have really good, mistly rock free show grounds!  We are very excited about this and hope with these improvements we will have a larger show series that we have had in recent years.  We are well aware that the footing in the rings has been an ongoing issue for many and we have worked hard to fix this.

Here are the show dates for all of our shows:

Gymkhana: May 17, June 28, July 12, August 9. and Rain date August 30

English: June 7, July 26. August 23

Western: June 14, July 19, August 16

Arena Challenge: June 27

Dressage: (held at Sundance stables) June 21, August 2, September 13

We hope to have all of our show books in the mail soon and will post them on here as well.

See you all in the show rings!

East Coast Reiners Association - This Sunday!

THIS SUNDAY!

First Reining Show of the season for ECRA at the beautiful Hillcrest Stables in Riverhead NY. In addition to the show there will be several vendors (East End Shop Girl, Sunny Bows, and Lost Cowboys!), a massive Chinese auction (see our facebook page for a list of some of the amazing items that have been donated) a 50/50, a live performance of our national anthem in the morning, and a birthday cake to celebrate ECRA’s 40th Birthday this year!

This is going to be a fantastic kick off not only to our ECRA shows, but really to the entire Long Island show season. Come one, come all and join the fun! Bring some friends!

We are also looking for some volunteers for the day of the show. In particular, we are in need of one or a few scribes to work with our judge. A scribe writes down the scores for the judge so they do not need to look away from the rider in the ring. It’s a great way to learn about reining and how the maneuvers are scored. You can just commit to it for a few classes it you like, and lunch is included for anyone who is used as a volunteer the day of the show. Other volunteer opportunities available! Email us at eastcoastreinersassociation@gmail.com if you are interested!

Show starts at 9:00am @ Hillcrest Stables, 1219 Middle Road, Riverhead, NY 11901.

Thank you to all who have donated to the auction, volunteered their time and efforts, sponsored our classes or donated to ECRA in some other way. We absolutely could not do this without all of you! Also a big thanks to Hillcrest Stables for always being supportive of our little club!

See you all on Sunday! (You would be crazy to pass this one up).

The foals were unimportant and discarded. Luckily his fate took a turn for the better when I laid eyes upon his furry face.

10 years later, he's all grown-up and been loved by many little girls over the years. He's gone to fancy horse shows, and truly has been the love of my life all along.

Then, in 2013 he was diagnosed with Lyme's Disease and 8 months later diagnosed with Cushing's Disease and Lamintis (tilting of the coffin bone inside the hoof, which can be debilitatingly painful). The vet had no reason as to how he acquired these diseases as his nutrition was on-point and he was not overweight. He now requires daily medication as well as theraputic shoes ($$) to remain pain-free, not to mention the initial diagnostics, tests, pain medicine and farm call expenses.

I have created this gofundme campaign in hopes that horse and animal lovers out there will help me pay down his medical expenses so that I can continue to give him the life he deserves, one without worry and a peacful, pain-free life.

ECRA Ride-In

East Coast Reiners Association is hosting a Ride-In on March 22, 2015 (see our ad under "Events") at Hillcrest Stables in Riverhead NY. This is really just a way to get together, school our horses in a show-like setting to warm up before our first actual show, and hang out with friends. It's a great time of year to start planning events to go to, helps to make spring feel a lot closer. You do not need to be a reiner to join us, all are welcome (although it is a bit of a western-centered event). Check out our event on this page and our website, www.ecraonline.com for more ECRA events. We hope to see some new faces on the 22nd!

Carol from Huntington Saddlery

Someone asked about Carol from Huntington Saddlery. Her last name is Russack. I think she was buried in St. Charles Cemetery. She was always such a nice, kind person who loved her animals dearly. Very sad that she passed away so quickly.
