Help a horse in need?

In 2006, "Blue," was resuced as an 8 month old colt who was destined for slaughter. He was a product of the Premarin Industry, which harvest's the urine of pregnant horses for use in hormone therapy in humans. His momma was bred and rebred to keep her pregnant. The foals were unimportant and discarded. Luckily his fate took a turn for the better when I laid eyes upon his furry face.

10 years later, he's all grown-up and been loved by many little girls over the years. He's gone to fancy horse shows, and truly has been the love of my life all along.

Then, in 2013 he was diagnosed with Lyme's Disease and 8 months later diagnosed with Cushing's Disease and Lamintis (tilting of the coffin bone inside the hoof, which can be debilitatingly painful). The vet had no reason as to how he acquired these diseases as his nutrition was on-point and he was not overweight. He now requires daily medication as well as theraputic shoes ($$) to remain pain-free, not to mention the initial diagnostics, tests, pain medicine and farm call expenses.

I have created this gofundme campaign in hopes that horse and animal lovers out there will help me pay down his medical expenses so that I can continue to give him the life he deserves, one without worry and a peacful, pain-free life.

ECRA Ride-In

East Coast Reiners Association is hosting a Ride-In on March 22, 2015 (see our ad under "Events") at Hillcrest Stables in Riverhead NY. This is really just a way to get together, school our horses in a show-like setting to warm up before our first actual show, and hang out with friends. It's a great time of year to start planning events to go to, helps to make spring feel a lot closer. You do not need to be a reiner to join us, all are welcome (although it is a bit of a western-centered event). Check out our event on this page and our website, www.ecraonline.com for more ECRA events. We hope to see some new faces on the 22nd!

Looking for riding in exchange for work

Hello all!

I am a college senior at Stony Brook who is currently looking for a horse to ride. I am very tall (6'4") and a male so I'm looking for a horse that is 17hh or up as I've got a lot of leg to take up! Willing to work a bit to ride english 1, at most 2 days a week. I have my car on campus so traveling is not an issue. Just want to find someone who is flexible with great horses! Can w/t, and tack up my own horse. Will eventually get back into the swing of cantering but as for now I would like a horse to ride around and go on trails with if that is possible. Would be a huge plus if I were able to ride a clydesdale or clydesdaleX as they are my favorite horse breed.

please call me at (631) 905-7194 or email me at christopher.clement@stonybrook.edu

BEWARE, DELINQUENT BOARDER POSSIBLY LOOKING FOR STALLS

There is a woman with numerous horses (currently 6) who might be looking for a boarding situation very soon. Be forewarned: she does not pay her bills/board and her checks bounce. She has been kicked out of at least 3 Long Island barns already.

At the time of this posting, her horses are being held under a lien by a commercial boarding facility. She has also been fired by two farriers and a vet, all due to non-payment.

She will tell you her previous barn owners, trainers or vets -people
she did not pay- were crazy or abusive or make up some story to appeal on behalf of her horses that she doesn't ride or even see very often. When she does make it to the barn with her kids, the family is reckless and creates major safety concerns.

Her MO is to pay her first month or two of board on time and then the money stops and the excuses will start, the list is endless. She is pathological. What ever credit card you may have on file will decline. Her horses have little monetary value. YOU as the facility owner will end up caring for these horses for months with little to no board payment while she strings together a web of lies about when the money is coming.

Be aware! Ask for references for any incoming boarders! This is a situation no other facility should go through.

Connetquot Riding Permit

i purchase a pass every Spring.  To support this wonderful park is an honor and pleasure.  It is an equestrian's paradise.  A jewel to be maintained and supported here in suburbia where open space is rare. Many persons avoid the parking fee too by entering the park from the equestrian center.  The Empire Passport is a bargain...good for parking at all of NYS parks!    I wonder, if you can afford a horse, why can't you support the preserve And NYSparks?  It seems like a small fee to pay to have the privilege of riding these trails.  Just my 2cents' on the subject!

Connetquot passes

When I renewed my annual pass for riding in Connetquot I was told that in 2014 only 80 passes were sold I know that is only a small percentage of the riders who use the trails there To all of you who complain about trails, rocks and ticks Headquarters looks at these numbers and feels only 80 people use the trails so money and resourses go elsewhere Kudos to all of you who renew yearly I would like to see 300 or more sold as in past years By the way the great Friends of Connetquot trail ride is May 3rd this year thanks Jerry and Rita

Horse Journal Free back issues

Hi-

Have almost all issues of Horse Journal from Vol 1 issue 1 when it was edited by Michael Plumb through April of 2013  (Vol 20 #4)- issues are in nice condition, been stored in filing cabinet second floor of non-smoker house.  But if you are allergic to cats, I can not promise they are dander free!

Maybe Pony Clubs would be interested for reference materials on horse care, riding etc-

I live in south shore nassau county but could meet someone for drop off-hate to see magazines end up in recycling bin.

Potbelly piglet

I have a 3 month old male neutered potbelly pig who is ready for adoption. He is litter trained and will go outside when you let him out. He is currently living inside and will need to until the weather gets warmer. Or if you have a warm barn or extra horse stall that has no drafts. He will make a great pet for a backyard barn or farm looking for a new member. will also make a great addition for a family looking for an indoor pig as well. Gets along great with my two dogs and whole family. Prefer him to go to a home with pig background or family who has a pig. Please email if you are interested or have any questions. There is a small adoption fee. email me at kristuhxlee@aol.com

IHA Mounted Drill Team "The Spirit of Long Island"

Love doing things with your horse but  showing isn’t for you? Maybe you’ve shown in the past but it’s time for a new challenge? Why not join a mounted drill team?

You need not be an expert.  Novice and advanced riders alike can enjoy the many benefits of the drill team experience.  Some of these are:

Improved communication between horse and rider

Improved riding skills

Better discipline of yourself and your horse

An increased awareness and understanding of proper timing

Cooperation and team work

Most horses adapt well to drill and it is a fun and exciting way to connect with your horse and other riders. Drill encourages great horsemanship, dedicated teamwork, responsibility and self-respect and the pride of achieving team goals together.

For more information on drilling and how to join the Spirit of Long Island Mounted Drill Team contact Loretta Hall at retthall@aol.com

Suffolk Equestrian Academy Islandia

Hello,

In regards to, Islandia Farms, unfortunately the property is being developed possibly as soon as next year, the indoor arena had been sold and taken down and the barns will most likely be down by the spring. So due to this we had to look at other options. We ended up buying a beautiful 10 acre farm in, Medford, known as, Touch N Go Farms. We have renamed the farm, Suffolk Equestrian Center. We will be advertising very soon with big plans ahead of us for the facility. In the 6 weeks that we have been here we have already began many renovations, so keep checking back for barn news and ads. Updates on the barn, shows, projects, and any other fun events will be posted reguarly! Our Phone number has not changed, 631-348-1948. It has just recently been switch to our new location, so if you do not get an answer immediately, bare with us, someone will contact you as soon as possible. The last two months have been extremely hectic, but exciting due to the move. Our website is www.SuffolkEquestrian.com or visit us on Facebook. We had a great 3 years at Islandia and will miss it but we are looking foward to whats ahead at our newly owned facility. Any Questions call or email suffolkequestrian@gmail.com!

Thanks,

Brian

National Day of the Horse

Thanks Here is a reminder that December 13 is the national day of the horse Please pass it on to your members and contact local news and TV outlets to make them aware This especially important to support the carriages in NYC thanks Jerry and Rita wishing you all happy healthy holidays PS the CAA was instrumental in getting May designated as National Carriage Driving month so promote that as well

December 13th is the National Day of the Horse, so please hug your horse and let them know how much you appreciate them. The day was designated in order to recognize the importance of the horse in developing our nation.
The horse is a living link to the heritage and history of our nation and represents a common bond among all peoples who led the way in building our country. Today the horse industry contributes $112 billion annually into our economy.
In 2004 Congress passed a resolution declaring December 13th as National Day of the Horse. The designation was made to commemorate the massive contribution horses have given to the economy, history and character of the United States. The resolution states:
1 encourages all citizens to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history and character of the United States
2 expresses its sense that the National Day of the Horse should be established in recognition of the importance of orses to the security, economy, recreation and heritage
3 urges the President to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States and interested organizations to observe National Day of the Horse wih appropriate programs and activities

Still Searching...

I'm still searching for my horse who went "missing" in July/August 2005 (his free leaser- a woman named Theresa G... can't remember her full last name, of Ridge- sold him 2 weeks after I moved out of state, illegally.) He was a 1986 chestnut thoroughbred gelding with a blaze and 4 socks. Tattoo number P02233.

A friend said she saw him being ridden on a road by Southaven Park a few years back, but she didn't get the person's name.

I don't necessarily want the horse back; just want to know how he's doing; if he's even still alive. Though, he would always be welcome to finish out his retirement on our farm in South Carolina :)

Please, any and all infomation is greatly appreciated!

Horse for adoption

A few years back I placed a horse for adoption notice.  His name is LB. Two nice young ladies came to see him and both were interested.  In fairness he was adopted to the first one who called.  Unfortunately, she fell on hard times.  I have him back.  I was looking for the second young lady who was interested.  She was from a barn in Ridge (Smith Road, maybe) I ran into her a while back. Anyway, I'm looking to adopt LB again and was wondering if anyone knows her, if she's still interested, etc. I can be reached on my cell 631-235-2219.

If anyone is interested, please contact me for further info.

Thanks all for any help.

Christmas Parades

Xmas Parades 2014

Its that time of year again, seems like we just did this.  Christmas is such a wonderful time of year and it’s nice to get out there and see the kids just loving the horses.  It’s all about the smiles on the faces of everyone, so please consider joining the Christmas parades this year, due to the cost of Insurance for each parade unless we have a better showing we may have to cancel some of them.  With everyone’s busy schedules, working, sports etc it’s easy to say maybe next time. So please think about getting those bells, tinsel, glitter and everything else and joining us. If your horse has not done a parade before you MUST have a walker, if you know your horse gets excited, you MUST have a walker.  This is for the safety of the spectators and horse and rider. You also need to be a member of I.H.A.  You can join before the day of parade and your membership will go thru 2015.

Dates of parades are Sayville Sat Nov 29th.  Parade starts at 9am.  We meet at Handsome Ave south of Montauk Highway, park way down, get decorated and ready and then go to our appointed area.  We get there 8am allowing time to get ready.

Islip Parade is Sat Dec 6th.  Parade starts at 2pm.  We meet approx 1am. south on Irish Lane make a right at Brookwood hall, follow narrow road at left to open field.  Try to stay together with other trailers.

Bohemia Electrical Parade Sunday Dec 7th.  Starts at 5pm.  We meet at 4pm. The meeting area has not been disclosed yet, remember you can get battery lights at Wallmart, Hardware stores, drug stores and as many as possible this is a fun parade to bring family to watch also, the Fire trucks from all over are decorated with Xmas scenes etc.

Anyone wishing to be a walker to keep all safe is greatly appreciated we really couldn’t do it without you.

call Wendy 567 8743 to register.

Then come join us for our Annual Xmas party with visit from Santa games covered dish dinner and fun for all that is Friday Dec 12 7pm B.R.C. Hope to see you there its fun fun and more fun.  RSVP to Laura at draftcrazyny@optonline.net

The horse is located in Riverhead.  I'm very worried about this poor baby..It's never good when you see "Free" pets being given away on that site unless you do reference checks, which I don't believe this person will do..If anyone is interested in adopting this baby..He's under Craigslist Long Island under "pets" and under "free" sections.  Please if someone has room.. give him a safe home. Wonderful Dog for Adoption

Looking for a wonderful dog?  Apple is a 3.5 year American Bully who is a LOVE. She loves everyone she comes in contact with and everyone loves her. She is housebroken and well trained - and only wants to make you happy. She wants to be an only child so she can have all your love for herself.  So if you want a great dog to be by your side - this is it. She is up for adoption, and needs a forever loving home - this girl deserves it. Pictures and words don't do her justice, but if you'd like to meet her get in touch with  Paws Unite People   at https://www.facebook.com/pawsunitepeople.

Here is a link with some pictures of this amazing dog:  https://www.facebook.com/jokerssidekick/media_set?set=a.10204507052064819.1073741828.1488241940&type=1

william - wormer

Rotational worming is an outdated concept. Most of the vets on Long Island recommend doing fecals now, not rotational worming due to the reason you stated.  My vet recommends a targeted wormer in spring and fall, regardless of fecal results.  I do fecals as part of the spring and fall shots.  If your horse is a high shedder, they may need wormer more frequently, but with the fecal, your vet can determine which wormer should be used instead of just a random one.  I find that having just a fecal done by your veterinarian is not that expensive, and cheaper than worming every two months.

Equineenergetix Workshop - Seeking traveling companion

I'm looking for someone to share a ride/commuting expenses with.  It's called "Seeing with the heart" and is given by a therapist up in Brewster, NY.  It's about 2 1/2 hr drive.

It's about how to access your intuition, etc. through various exercises with the horses.  Includes a private rounpen session with horse and workshop facilitator.

It's this weekend, Sat, 7/12 - 4-8 p.m.  and Sunday, 7/13 - 10-4 p.m.  It would involve staying over Saturday night at a local hotel/motel.

If you are interested, go to Equineenergetix.com and click on "Seeing with the Heart" workshop for more details.  I went to on in May on "mindfulness" and it was quite good.

Please contact me if you are interested in discussing the workshop/commuting with me.  Thanks,  Laura

response to georgia

i'm trying to understand why georgia is so angry at the young women who placed a work/ride ad.  i read the ad and it offered their services for barn work, riding/exercising horses, or barn work in exchange for riding. it makes perfect sense to me that they included their riding experience since they were looking to ride. if you aren't interested in hiring them, georgia, don't. no need to bad mouth them.  and good luck finding and keeping a barn worker. you must be a miserable person to work for.

To Georgia

Since Georgia seems to be referring to an ad I had posted about me and my cousin looking for work:

the reason we included our riding experience in the work ad is because we had first talked to a few people that were looking for a work-to ride agreement or they were looking for someone to come exercise their horse that they did not have time for. We are however also looking for anyone who needs someone to do their barn chores so as you said they themselves have time to ride. Since we are willing to do both types of work we felt it was important to include our experience with both riding and working. Sorry to offend you. If you do need someone to help you with your barn so you have more time to ride we both speak English and are over 18 :) thank you

About barn work

This is a question ... why in almost every message where people are supposed to be looking for barn work does

80% of their post focus on their riding ability? (really their own impressions of what they might be able to do)

If I am looking for barn help, it is for barn help. The last couple of posts from evidently two young people trying to bluff their barn and horse experience  really hit me. If I have someone working on my property they will be no younger than 18. This has to do with liability.

They should have a good working knowledge of the English language in the event I have to leave detailed instuctions.

I don't care how you ride. If I am looking for barn help it is so I HAVE THE TIME TO RIDE. To many of us horses are an investment not a toy. I will pay you what you are worth or the legal wage.

Looking for Noble Assent

I am looking for a horse named Noble Assent. He gave  us so much in the short 14 years that he owned us. He is a 16.3 Liver Chestnut TB. He was adopted, or so I have been told, by a little girl. She showed on him and yes.... came home with a Blue over fences. Smile

Noble is NOT old. !!!!  He has ring bone, but when he is shod at 51 degrees it does not bother him. I have x rays for the current owner, along with a written report on the " ring bone". The bones will NOT fuse and he NEVER had a lame day in the 14 years that he owned us. He also has a wart on his left hind 1/4. Nothing to worry about with that. Had it checked and have the report from Cornell University.

He needs to eat ALOT.... He is not your usual 2 flakes in the am 1 for lunch and 3 for dinner along with a scoop of pellets. He was on sweet feed and it did not make him hot AT ALL. He needed at leased 400 pounds, put on, when I saw him. THIS IS NO ONES FAULT.. He is the worst hard keeper.
The last time I saw him he needed to be floated. I had him floated twice a year by Dr. Karcher. He won't toss his head and goes just fine in a D ring as long as he is floated. No need to give him a harsh bit. He won't respond. This is a debatable issue, but I know him.... If I could take him out on trail, bareback, and then have him realize he was in the woods and he was like ... get me out of here!!!!!!... he never took off and fought with all his might not to bolt. I prepared to die, but he took VERY good care of me. All I had him in was a D ring. He raced so he could have blown right through that bit. But he took care of me. Please post on how he is doing. I am battling cancer so I would like to know that he is ok. I have not been deemed cancer free yet, but we look forward to hearing that news in January.  My worst fear is dying not knowing that he is ok. Thank you... and please know that I have his entire file for all of his health reports. He is very non agressive, in a large herd, so he will not eat. I had him out on 15 acres and that did him in. The person from the backyard barn took him and took awsome care of him. She put weight on him and I know that she loves him too.

Once again I only want to know how he is doing. I am trying to get his tack from his old backyard barn. If I am able to get it, I would love for you to have it. His show tack, wraps, blankets, bits, all with his colors -navy blue and grey. I also have a cooler and due to his VERY HIGH withers I have a special pad that goes under his show pad. Also a size 54 girth. I don't know if that will fit him now.

Please let me know how he is. I will never stop loving him. Every night he is in my prayers and dreams. He is a remarkable horse, as was my Sprinkles Cry.

Thanks !!!!!Smile

Barn cat for Adoption

Hey everyone! I have a gorgeous Tuxedo cat available for adoption. He is a wonderful boy and just doesn't do well in a home setting, we are thinking and active outdoor lifestyle would be great for him!

He loves to cuddle, but when he's had enough he lets you know without warning! He is friendly but he acts like a prince!

Barn check (instead of home check) required and an application must be filled out prior to adoption. He needs the best home possible!

Poor guy has been through 4 different homes before winding back up in ours. and now we can begin to figure out why. He would do great catching pests outside, or simply being a handsome fellow to be aorund!

IHA - June 17th, 2014 Meeting at 7pm

IMPORTANT NOTICE: IHA - June 17th, 2014 Meeting at 7pm - Guest Speaker: Vic Sackett of ACC Systems will introduce us to Radio-frequency identification (RFID)

To be held at:

The Bohemia Recreation Center

1 Ruzicka Way

Bohemia, NY 11716

Vic Sackett of ACC Systems (vsackett@accsystemsinc.com - 631-750-9238) will be introducing us to RFID, which are micro computer chips that can be placed on horses (invisible to the eye, and the size of a piece of rice) and that can hold data such as lineage and medical data and be a GPS locator.

Please invite your vets.  It will be great to get vets involved too, for easier medical tracking of your beloved horse.

Mr. Sackett will have samples to display and purchase if you desire.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the wireless non-contact use of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data, for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically

stored information.

Basic RFID system consist of three components:

1. An antenna or coil usually made of copper or aluminum

2. A Reader also called a ransceiver (with decoder)

3. A transponder (commonly called an RF tag) that is electronically programmed with unique information.

The antenna powered by the reader, emits radio signals to activate the tag and reads and writes data to it. Antennas are the conduits between the tag and the reader which controls the system’s data acquisition and communication.

The reader can be configured either as a handheld or a fixed-mount device. The reader emits radio waves in ranges of anywhere from one inch to 100 feet or more, depending upon its power output and the radio frequency used.

When an RFID tag passes through the electromagnetic zone of the antenna, it detects the reader’s activation signal. The reader decodes the data encoded in the tag’s integrated circuit (silicon chip) and the data is passed to the host computer for processing.

RFID tags come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Animal tracking tags, inserted beneath the skin, can be as small as a pencil lead in diameter and one-half inch in length. These glass tags are used mainly in horses and pet animals. The glass tags do not break because they are surrounded by the animals muscle/flesh. Farm and ranch animals are usually tagged in the ear like a large plastic ear ring.

TheU.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved an implantable passive RFID chip for use in tracking horses and ponies for the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). The NAIS is a federal voluntary information system operated

by the USDA to help track animals in the event of a disease outbreak.  Each chip is a passive 134.2 kHz RFID tag encased in glass. The size of a rice kernel, the tag is implanted just under the skin in a horse's neck.

Each chip is encoded with a 15-digit unique identification number associated with data about the horse, such as the identity and location of its owner. This information is stored in the NAIS database An RFID reader captures the unique ID number on the chip at the time of the reading.
